The UI Libraries offers early-career librarians or librarians new to research libraries the opportunity for their first professional-level experience in academic librarianship via its Residency Librarian Program. The Program consists of two positions and seeks applicants with the potential to bring to their librarian careers the perspective that comes from their understanding of the experiences of members of groups historically underrepresented in academic libraries.
The three-year term appointments are designed to provide an immersion into academic librarianship, an opportunity to focus on areas of interest and funding to support professional engagement at the national level. By participating in the Residency Librarian program, individuals will demonstrate skills at a professional level, develop a professional network, and be prepared for their next career opportunity. Resident librarians are not eligible for promotion but are full-time and have access to benefits, paid leave, etc. They may apply for permanent positions for which they feel qualified but are not guaranteed continued employment following the residency.
The Undergraduate Engagement Residency Librarian (UERL) is a member of the Undergraduate Engagement Department at the Main Library. This position reports to the Head of the Undergraduate Engagement Department, and focuses on building connections, developing programs, and promoting the role of the library as both an academic and nonacademic partner in support of undergraduate student success. The UERL is responsible for the design and implementation of innovative library services and instruction programs aimed at undergraduate students, especially within the Rhetoric and the General Education curricula. The UERL works collaboratively with colleagues in the libraries and beyond to enhance undergraduate student engagement. The UERL works with other staff to accomplish the unit’s initiatives and works to accomplish Libraries’ initiatives by serving on Libraries’ and campus-wide committees.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Facilitate the library efforts for the undergraduate’s first-year experience and other undergraduate student activities in collaboration with the Undergraduate Engagement Department, library liaisons, and campus partners;
• Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty in support of campus teaching and student-centered learning;
• Develop materials and provide instruction for library-sponsored courses, embedded partnerships with faculty, general workshops, and orientation and outreach activities;
• Provide general research support services (in-person, email, chat);
• Assess the impact of the Libraries' efforts to serve undergraduates through programs, resources, and learning spaces;
• Participate in Libraries’ initiatives by serving on Libraries’ and campus committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events;
• Contribute to and learn from the profession through such avenues as local, state, and national professional organizations, presentations, and publications.
The UERL will spend the first year building a working knowledge of how University of Iowa undergraduates experience the Libraries through instruction, research consultation, and building spaces around campus, while actively participating in instruction, orientation, and outreach activities. The second year will include developing an area or specific population of students on which to focus instruction and outreach work, while also expanding opportunities to work collaboratively with people outside the Undergraduate Engagement department. The third year will provide additional assignments in an individual’s interest areas. This structure is subject to change depending up the individual knowledge, skills, and abilities of the librarian.
Residents will participate actively in University and Libraries committees, councils and task forces. They will develop collegial relationships with UI Libraries staff, other UI faculty and administrators, and colleagues at peer institutions. Residents will become involved in relevant national and regional professional organizations. During their residency they will acquire first-hand experience with research and scholarship, service to the University Libraries, and service to the profession.
• Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library and Information Science on or by May 31, 2019
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity in an academic environment, in a workplace setting, and/or in the community.

• Experience with instruction and/or outreach to undergraduates (or equivalent)
• Familiarity with information literacy and instructional technology concepts, pedagogies, and assessment, especially assessment of student learning.
• Knowledge of current developments in library instruction, student development, and undergraduate student success initiatives.
