June 5 2019 Harvard Graduate School of Education 49458BR Job Code 386057 Library Professional Duties & Responsibilities The Research and Instructional Design Librarian is responsible for providing in-depth research and curriculum support for the diverse community of learners at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). The librarian designs and develops reusable learning objects that can be embedded into blended learning environments. Reporting to the Associate Director for Student Academic Services, the incumbent makes effective instructional use of educational technology for curriculum innovation and promotes the application of technology for the creation of student-centered learning. The Research and Instructional Design Librarian serves as an active member of Gutman Library's Research Services Team and the larger Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) Team. The position leverages critical pedagogies, the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, and the RUSA Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Service Providers to support HGSE's curricular, research, and strategic priorities. Specific areas of responsibilities include: Research Services Duties
  • Consult with and instruct library users in devising research strategies.
  • Identify appropriate research materials to use within consultations and instruction.
  • Provide library instruction via research consultations, reference queries, and curriculum-integrated classes.
  • Develop instructional materials, including LibGuides, online learning objects, and other forms of curricular content.
  • Serve as a liaison to assigned HGSE academic programs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to improve library services and programs through data-driven and research-based assessment methodologies.
  • Promote research services across the HGSE community.
  • Participate in programs and initiatives to support user outreach.
Instructional Design Duties
  • Identify, construct, implement, and promote learning tools and instructional services in collaboration with the Research and Writing Services teams.
  • Develop online tutorials, instruction sessions, workshops, and presentations to promote general and course-specific research competencies.
  • Conduct formal assessment of Gutman Library's student academic and community learning services, including effectiveness and usability of online-learning objects and other library instructional materials in enhancing student-learning outcomes.
Other Duties
  • Represent Gutman Library on HGSE and Harvard Library committees.
  • Share in the management of teaching research data discovery, interpretation, and visualization.
The Research & Instructional Design Librarian should possess:
  • An active awareness and broad understanding of current issues in education-focused reference, instruction, and scholarly communication, including emerging trends, technologies, methods, and best practices as they relate to instructional design.
  • Ability to effectively communicate these issues to HGSE faculty, staff, students, and other members of the University community.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral skills, including presentation and teaching skills.
  • Ability to use technology in creative ways to solve problems and facilitate project management.
  • Careful attention to detail and rigor in documentation.
  • Proficiency in citation management tools (e.g. Zotero, EndNote, etc.)
  • A professional service trajectory related to the position's duties and responsibilities.
Basic Qualifications
  • Master's degree in library or information science, or an equivalent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum 4 years' reference and instruction experience in an academic or research library environment.
  • Experience working with a diverse community and commitment to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the curriculum and across the community.

Additional Qualifications
  • Second graduate degree closely related to instructional design, educational technology, learning sciences, human development, higher education, or psychology.
  • Knowledge of education, psychology, or other social science information resources.
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in preparing and conducting library instruction.
  • Experience working with learning analytics to assess learners' progress in a curriculum.
  • Knowledge of bibliometrics, altmetrics, digital literacy, and information literacy.
  • Ability to create and maintain a scholarly research agenda related to the position's duties and responsibilities.
