General Summary The AUL for Research & Learning provides leadership, strategic direction, and support for Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and  Area Studies; Special Collections; and East Asia. The AUL ensures a coherent and responsive information and service environment for the highly interdisciplinary research and teaching needs of the campus and will take a leadership role in building new partnerships with University and external communities. Direct reports include the Director of Humanities and Areas Studies, Director of the Special Collections Research Center, Curator of the East Asian Collection, and the Director of Sciences and Social Sciences. The AUL for Research & Learning represents the Library in University-wide initiatives for research, teaching, and outreach initiatives, as well as in local, regional, and national settings; works with academic departments to align services proactively and effectively with current and emerging academic priorities; and identifies trends in higher education and research librarianship to inform strategies for providing innovative and transformative services to the University community. Reporting directly to the University Librarian and serving as a member of the Library’s senior leadership team, the AUL for Research & Learning collaborates with the University Librarian and the other AULs to plan, evaluate, and set strategic directions and priorities for the Library, and sponsors initiatives and partnership programs within and beyond the University of Chicago. Essential Responsibilities Library Leadership and Planning
  • As a member of the Director’s Council, develops and implements library priorities that align with the mission and vision of the University, and contributes to the Library’s strategic planning, resource management, policies, and assessment.
  • Provides leadership and stewardship for major program development and collaborates to enable and support cross-divisional initiatives.
  • Contributes to fundraising strategies and plays a role in fundraising initiatives and events
Divisional Administration and Management
  • Provides leadership for divisional planning, resource allocation, and assessment ensuring that division goals and objectives are incorporated into the Library’s overall strategic plan.
  • Interacts with faculty, staff, students, and community members to understand their needs and develop policies and programs that enable an exceptional and coherent user experience.
  • Ensures responsive and accessible environments for learning and research within library facilities that recognizes the diverse needs of multiple constituencies.
  • Inspires and maintains a strategically-focused, collaborative, and highly knowledgeable workforce, and nurtures an organizational culture of innovation, evidence-based investments, and responsive program development.
Professional Contributions and Development
  • Actively participates in and contributes to the profession, advancing new program models and inter-institutional initiatives, and using trends and opportunities to enrich local programs and strategic planning.
  • Strategically engages in campus-wide initiatives, consortial partnerships, and regional, state, national and international organizations and fosters new partnerships in support of the Library’s goal to expand the Library’s reach through public engagement.
  • Work with appropriate campus committees, units, faculty, and administrators to develop collaborations that advance teaching, learning and research.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent advanced degree).
  • Minimum of seven years of proven leadership in managing units, departments, budgets, teams and projects in an academic research library with a focus on the delivery of user-centered services.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly engagement and professional service, including presentations, publications, and committee service on campus, regional, or national-level organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Record of interactions with faculty that demonstrate a deep understanding of the scholarly process.
  • Strong ability to value and encourage diversity, inspire, build trust, lead organizational and cultural change, foster innovation, and empower staff growth.
  • Experience in financial management; excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to flourish within an organization that values experimentation, risk taking, and bold thinking.
  • Experience using technology to support service innovation and/or productivity enhancements.
  • Record of successful grant application and management.
