SUMMARY OF POSITION: This position provides operational support (public and technical services) for the science libraries at the University of Cincinnati: Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library (GMP) and Chemistry-Biology Library (Chem-Bio). Other responsibilities include staffing the service desk during designated hours and serves as an operational backup in the absence of GMP’s Public Services Supervisor.  Staffs service desk and provides operational and project support at Chem-Bio during designated hours.  At both locations, provides library service functions, including processing daily mail and new materials, periodicals binding, and research assistance.  Assists in the supervision and training of student assistants at both locations.  At GMP, oversees the physical maintenance of collections, including shifting, inventory, weeding, shelfreading and other student assignments in the stacks.  Provides collection management support at Chem-Bio.  Assists with processing and review of special collections and rare book collections at GMP and SEL locations, including collections of the UC Herbarium and the Cincinnati Observatory.  Assists SEL staff with displays, exhibits and promotional materials.  This is a 40 hour/week position. This position requires the ability to stoop and bend, lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs., and/or move loaded book trucks weighing up to 100 lbs. Punctuality is a critical requirement as this position assists with opening a library location on weekdays.   This position is a full-time, three year term appointment.

RELATIONSHIP AND AUTHORITY: Reports to the Operations Manager of the Science & Engineering Libraries (SEL).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complete opening procedures for the Geology-Math-Physics Library, Monday-Friday.
  • Provide coverage for service desks, perform circulation functions, and attend to informational needs.  As appropriate, refer patron questions and requests to librarians and informationists.  Interpret library policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the training of student assistants.  Serve as back-up supervisor for student assistants as necessary.  Oversee student assignments in the stacks.
  • At designated locations, process new books and prepare binding tickets for print periodicals.  Assist with processing and review of special book collections.  Assist with projects to review library collections (e.g., analysis of usage data, print holdings in consortial/peer institutions, online access options).
  • Assists SEL staff with displays, exhibits and promotional materials.   Participate in special projects for the Science and Engineering Libraries, such as technology or facility initiatives.
  • Participate in UC Libraries meetings, trainings, and committees as appropriate to responsibilities.  Provide regular reports of work activities to supervisor.
  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree with one (1) year experience; -OR- Associates’ degree with three (3) years’ experience; -OR- five (5) years’ experience;  degree and experience must be related to positon specifications as outline in the job posting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least one year of library work experience in a computer-based environment.
  • Demonstrated work experience serving a diverse user population.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience assisting with operational management of a unit or in supervising student assistants who provide operational support.
  • Knowledge of an integrated library system (ILS), such as record editing.
