The University of Kansas Libraries is a member of the ACRL Diversity Alliance; the Alliance will provide support and a cohort for the Undergraduate Engagement Resident during their appointment at KU.
The University of Kansas Libraries seeks a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative individual to join the faculty. Reporting to the Head of the Center for Undergraduate Initiatives and Engagement, this two-year faculty-status resident position is an opportunity for a new MLIS graduate to develop and apply new skills and programs. The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will focus on building connections, developing programs, and promoting the role of the library as a partner in support of undergraduate student success.
This position will support, implement and provide innovative library programming for first year students through graduation, and develop student learning outcomes assessment. In particular, this position will contribute to teaching and learning through sustainable, strategic partnerships, and develop responsive and scalable resources that support campus-wide retention efforts, particularly for those focused on first-generation or underrepresented students, as well as students in need. The successful candidate should be interested in engaging and supporting all undergraduate students, serving as a mentor for first-generation college students, and actively contributing to the advancement of undergraduate initiatives at the University of Kansas. Specifically, this individual will create diverse, strategic, and enduring experiences that support student success and retention efforts.
The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian is a key contributor to advancing the Libraries’ goals to integrate information literacy in the curriculum, establish new modes of instruction, and collaborate with campus units to improve student retention.

This is a full-time, 2-year limited-term non-tenure track faculty position.
Professional Responsibilities (70%)
- Expand Libraries’ efforts in facilitating undergraduate research and learning experiences and other undergraduate student activities in collaboration with KU Libraries colleagues, and strategic campus partners.
- Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty in support of undergraduate teaching and learning.
- Support information literacy integration into first-year programs including but not limited to University 101, First and Second Year English, and first-year seminars.
- Develop and assess student learning outcomes to support continuous improvement of student learning and engagement.
- Work with the ACRL Diversity Alliance and other professional organizations as appropriate to further the strategic goals of the KU Libraries concerning diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Provide instruction for courses, workshops, and programs.
- Contribute toward the development and teaching of Libraries’ credit-bearing courses.
- Collaborate with Libraries’ colleagues to assess efforts to support undergraduates through programs, resources, and learning spaces.
- Participate in programs and events that support student recruitment, academic preparedness, and retention.
- Actively engage students and student groups as regards Open Educational Resources (OER) and related intellectual property concepts including copyright, the public domain, fair use, and open access to scholarly resources.
- Actively communicate issues implicit in scholarly communication and open access in discussions with colleagues and with the KU community.Attends training and events designed to promote understanding of trends and best practices in scholarly communications. Reflects this understanding in his or her work as a librarian at KU.
- Actively participate in, and advocate for, the educational role of the Libraries through dynamic engagement in campus teaching and research, campus collaborations, or staff development and training.
- Identifies and makes use of teaching opportunities in any circumstance, promotes the Libraries instructional resources and support, and obtains instructional expertise from colleagues as appropriate.
- Demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity efforts in the Libraries and contribute to an inclusive environment. Participate in and contribute to strategic professional growth and training.
- May supervise 1-2 student assistants.
- Contributes to the profession’s collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activity.
- Engages in service to the Libraries, the University, and to professional organizations by participating in committee work, projects, and contributory achievements.
- Represent KU Libraries in regional, national, and/or international professional organizations of relevance to the performing arts. Participate in regional, national, and/or international consortial collaborations.
- Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent from a foreign institution by time of appointment.
- Experience that demonstrates an interest in teaching undergraduate students.
- Experience that demonstrates an understanding of issues faced by non-traditional, first-generation, underrepresented populations, and international students.
- Effective written communication skills as demonstrated by the candidate’s application materials, and other examples of written work and/or publications.
- Interest in creating programs and services for transfer, first-generation, and underrepresented student populations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact and work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and other members of the community.
- Knowledge of instructional design and pedagogical principles.
- Familiarity with academic programs and/or services for an online environment.
- Knowledge of assessment techniques employed in libraries and in higher education.
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and self-direction.
