The Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research plays a critical role in continuing this tradition. We invite a transformational leader to become the new AUL for Research who shares our vision, values and responsibility for library-wide strategy and direction. 
 
The AUL for Research will be responsible for leading the library's Research Division and will clearly and effectively create, articulate and implement strategic directions and objectives for the library with an emphasis on inclusivity and interdependence.  We are seeking a leader who demonstrates a deep understanding of and enthusiasm for the evolving role of a leading research library as we continually transform services in fulfillment of our mission.
 
Specific responsibilities include:
  • reporting to the Dean of Libraries and contributing as a member of a highly aligned senior leadership team, sharing responsibility for the overall direction and success of the Library  
  • continuing the deep interdependence within library leadership to advance our collections strategy and services
  • partnering with research leadership across campus and engaging with high-level campus initiatives 
  • leading the deployment of Research division expertise, including approximately 90 subject librarians, informationists, liaisons and related staff  
  • ensuring that principles of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility are fully integrated throughout the work of the Research Division 
  • aligning resources with strategic priorities in order to innovate library service portfolios, to connect to emergent practices and technologies, and to continue reimagining the library's engagement with the university research community
  • actively engaging with inter-institutional partnerships (e.g. HathiTrust, Big Ten Academic Alliance)
  • engaging with campus global interest and international initiatives 
 
Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in library science, or an advanced degree in a relevant subject or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with emphasis on excellent communication, analytical, conceptual capabilities; ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences
  • Significant demonstrated successful managerial and administrative experience in a research library or in a related complex academic setting
  • Successful record of implementing programs in support of research and/or scholarly communication
  • Familiarity with a broad range of disciplinary research methodologies and practices
  • Appreciation for the importance of diversity in the workplace and the ability to flourish in a culture that values diversity of thought and backgrounds
  • Record of successful resource management and development activities
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational change, and ability to inspire innovation
  • Commitment and strong record of modeling, mentoring and developing individuals and teams
  • Preferred familiarity with sponsored research or grant management experience.
  • Strong evidence of scholarship and professional service, including presentations, publications, and service to relevant organizations and associations.

Additional Information
Appointment is anticipated at the Librarian rank.  Salary is dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Librarian appointments carry with them increased expectations regarding professional development, professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library's process for librarian promotion and advancement.
