This is a full-time appointment available starting July 2019.

The University of California, Berkeley seeks a creative, collaborative, outreach-oriented, and user-centered librarian to support world-class research and teaching in the chemical and physical sciences through active engagement with instruction, information literacy, research assistance, collection development, and outreach to students, faculty, and the broader academic community. This position serves as subject librarian for chemistry, chemical & biomolecular engineering, physics, and astronomy.

The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 30,000 undergraduate students, over 11,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. With a collection of more than 12 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.

The Library’s Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS) Division consists of five libraries - the Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Library, Earth Sciences & Map Library, Engineering Library, Mathematics Statistics Library, and Physics-Astronomy Library. Collectively the libraries and their staff - 6 librarians, 10 staff, and over 35 student employees - support the research, teaching, and study needs of students and faculty in the College of Chemistry, the College of Engineering, the College of Letters & Science’s Mathematical & Physical Sciences Division, the Geography Department, and an array of Organized Research Units. The collections and services are also heavily used by the broader academic community.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Engineering & Physical Sciences Division, the Chemical & Physical Sciences Librarian serves as the selector and liaison for four academic departments: Chemistry, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Physics, and Astronomy. As liaison, the librarian establishes strong relationships with faculty and students in these departments through active engagement and outreach. The librarian provides user-centered reference and instructional services including virtual reference, consultations, in-person classes, online subject guides, and other instructional materials in support of science resources, services, and research workflow tools.

The librarian will be responsible for collection development, management, and assessment for their four assigned subjects. This includes collaborating with other librarians on campus and within the UC System on interdisciplinary and/or system-wide collection decisions and scholarly communication issues.
The librarian will also play a key role in outreach across the EPS Division. Building on successes within their assigned departments, the librarian will help develop effective communication strategies to promote library resources and services across the engineering and physical sciences and will facilitate division-wide outreach efforts and events.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Advancement in the Librarian series is based in part on professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.
