Head Librarian, Strategic Technology

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applications and nominations for the position of Head of Library Strategic Technologies. This 12-month tenure-track position reports to the Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies, and provides creative leadership for proactive innovation, maintenance, enhancement and support of library-specific technologies, including the library discovery platforms and website, institutional repository and scholarship deposit, faculty activities reporting, and library-specific hardware and software to support library operations and services. The successful candidate is expected to work in a highly collaborative organization to provide leadership and coordination of library technology services, ultimately supporting the Libraries` and University priorities related to teaching and learning, research, and service. Responsibilities and Duties: The Head of Library Strategic Technologies will provide leadership and management of the Libraries Strategic Technologies Department. You will be a user-focused leader who fosters awareness of social responsibility, inherent and historical institutional biases and access limitations, and ethics within library technologies, and you will advocate for services that support diversity and inclusion. You will actively engage with faculty, staff, and units in the Libraries to identify needs and priorities and will work with the Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies to establish a cohesive strategy for library technology. You will also collaborate across the Libraries, Commonwealth Campuses and with campus-wide stakeholder groups, such as the Vice President for Research Office, Office of Information Security, and Penn State IT in aligning the Libraries' technology strategy with these units. You will oversee the design, implementation, and management of policies and workflows for departmental activities; foster professional development of staff to meet the challenge of a rapidly changing environment; stay current on developing technologies, standards, and best practices in library technologies; and represent the Libraries in matters concerning library technologies at the local, national, and international level. This position will serve on the Dean's Library Council. This position requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in a relevant subject area combined with appropriate experience in a research library setting; knowledge of issues, strategies, and best practices in the areas of access, discovery, and preservation of information; demonstrated understanding of ethical and social issues in information technology and libraries; experience mentoring information technology professionals and developing a supportive and rewarding team culture; demonstrated leadership experience; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to plan, coordinate, and implement effective projects; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; creative, energetic, and collaborative work style; excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation and teamwork skills; and ability to meet the requirements of promotion. Desired qualifications include experience writing and managing grants; research and professional activity with library technologies; and experience supervising library faculty or staff. Compensation and Benefits: Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience. Faculty may be asked to travel as official representatives of the Libraries to certain events and those trips are reimbursed at full cost within limits established by the University.
