Preservation Specialist UCSB Library Manages the workflow of mending and marking operations. Using initiative, originality, and judgement, establishes daily priorities for work. Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants in mending, marking, and binding tasks. Assigns work, conducts annual evaluations, provides consistent feedback, and coordinates disciplinary process. Independently determines appropriate preservation treatments and decisions. Applies knowledge and expertise in preservation techniques and materials assessment. Responsible for all activities related to the marking and bar-coding of material received from library departments, and for ensuring that materials are labeled and routed accurately and in a timely manner. Liaises with and consults other library and academic departments regarding the mending, marking, and binding of various materials. Manages mending/preservation activities for damaged serials and monographs; oversees and performs in-house mending/preservation for designated materials; and processes monographs sent to UC Bindery; coordinates and performs binding preparation activities for serials including database entry and reconciliation. Reqs: Two to three years of library experience and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Ability to develop and implement library policies and procedures; ability to utilize initiative, judgement, and originality in solving the most difficult problems. Ability to interpret and apply complex description, filing, and data entry procedures. Demonstrated customer service experience and ability to work effectively with a community of diverse constituents, including students, staff, and faculty. High degree of computer literacy and comfort in the digital environment; the ability to independently learn new technologies and their applications in libraries and to instruct colleagues in their use. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced academic environment. Note: Criminal history background check required. $23.70-$25.41/hr.
