Position Overview

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) seeks applications for an innovative and dynamic librarian to work collaboratively to support the scholarly and research activities of UCR faculty, researchers, and students. The Innovative Media Librarian will be responsible for providing outreach and consultation for media and maker projects. The incumbent will work within the Research Services (RS) Department (particularly with the Maker Services Coordinator), and collaboratively with staff and departments across the library.

Located an hour's drive to the east of Los Angeles, an hour west of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, an hour east of ocean beaches, ninety minutes north of San Diego, and an hour south of mountain ski resorts, UCR is located in an area of dramatic landscapes and rich cultural traditions. The University is a dynamic, aggressively-developing land grant research institution dedicated to preparing its diverse student body to be successful competitors in the world marketplace of ideas. The UCR Library is a critical partner in preparing UCR's students to be globally competitive while simultaneously preparing them for careers in the Inland Empire and beyond. The mission of the UCR Library is no less than to bring the world's information resources to the UCR community and to ensure that UCR students, faculty, and staff have the skills to fully exploit those resources to change the world for the better.

The UCR Library is a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems; and a dynamic and effective leader.

The UCR Library is comprised of three facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 22,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 214, including 26 FTE librarians, 90 FTE support personnel, and 98 students in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomás Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC's more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC's California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the Universitys digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit; The University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Research Services (RS) in the Research and Instructional Services Division, the Innovative Media Librarian will work collaboratively to support the scholarly and research activities of UCR faculty, researchers, and students by developing specialized research and instructional partnerships; building innovative media and maker services; and providing general research support and outreach.

• Utilizes media and maker technologies and methods in support of research and instructional applications, with an emphasis on digital fabrication and/or virtual reality

• In collaboration with the Maker Services Coordinator (and other library colleagues as appropriate), utilizes and supports the continued success of the Creat'R Lab, a makerspace located in the Orbach Science Library

• Proactively seeks out and develops opportunities for research and instructional partnerships with faculty and academic units on campus, effectively deploying technical, scholarly, and project management skills to bring projects to completion

• Offers workshops and training on digital media and/or maker methods or tools

• Helps plan and participates in special events (for example, a showcase, maker faire, or hackathon)

• Advocates for sharing digital outputs (for example, publishing STL files produced through a 3D modeling project) and advises on open research and reproducibility applications

• Initiates and leads special projects; for example, developing a robust technology lending program or piloting a mobile media/maker cart that can be used to take media technologies beyond the library

• In collaboration with the Digital Scholarship Librarian and Digital Initiatives Specialist (and other library colleagues as appropriate), advises on developing spaces to support digital media and scholarship

• Maintains knowledge and practical expertise in digital media and making, including suggesting how new ideas and services can be applied to the local environment

• Provides research support as part of the Research Services librarian team (consultations, workshops, chat reference, and other departmental and librarywide collaborations)

• Promotes the UCR Library's media and maker services and other research support activities

• Collaborates on research services projects with library colleagues across the organization, including Teaching and Learning, Digital Initiatives, Metadata, Preservation, Collection Strategies, and Special Collections & University Archives

• Participates in library-wide activities, administrative committees, special projects and library programs; represents the UCR Library on University of California standing committees and ad-hoc groups, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• ALA-accredited Master's Degree or equivalent experience or degree in one or more fields relevant to the position

• Experience with methods, tools, and/or spaces related to digital media or making in research and/or teaching

• Experience in the use and application of at least one media or maker technology or method, including but not limited to: digital fabrication, virtual or augmented reality, electronics, multimedia, audio or video (A/V) production, etc.

• Demonstrated understanding of the research lifecycle and ability to analyze, implement and adapt new library services to meet emerging research needs

• Demonstrated understanding of project management

• Commitment to advocating for open research outputs and, when possible and desirable, providing alternative solutions to closed platforms and processes

• Evidence of creative thinking about library services and technologies

• Excellent organizational skills, and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects

• Demonstrated high level of initiative

• Effective oral and written communication

• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in a digital media lab, makerspace, or comparable environment

• Experience with digital fabrication, particularly 3D modeling and/or printing

• Experience or ability and willingness to learn about virtual reality technologies and approaches

• Engagement or active participation with national or regional digital media or makerspace initiatives

Salary and Benefits:

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of: $61,201 - $84,260

Appointment at rank of Assistant Librarian to Librarian - Potential Career depending upon qualifications and experience. Advancement through the librarian ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every two to three years, each of which includes substantial peer review.
