SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY:
The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC) is a facility dedicated to the intellectual, social, cultural, and economic development of the people of British Columbia. We provide educational resources and services, open spaces for study, research and innovation, and we work with community partners on initiatives to promote lifelong learning across the province. Working with the Library and Learning Centre staff, the University and external communities, the Assistant Director is responsible for leading and managing the Learning Centre’s outreach and engagement initiatives and for the daily operations of IKBLC, including programs and services such as the Chapman Learning Commons and Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication.
- A graduate degree from an accredited program in Library, Archival and Information Science.
- At least six years of experience in developing and managing programs and services for a broad-based community of users.
- Experience in managing staff, budgets, services and facilities, including experience with library renovation projects.
- A proven commitment to service excellence and a vision of library services to support 21st century learners.
- Experience with organization change and change management best practises.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff and colleagues, inspire innovation, and develop and motivate teams and individuals.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in a variety of media, and experience working with a wide range of community users. Community-focused, strong organizational skills and the ability to contribute to the operationalization of the Statement of Purpose and Charter of Principles for IKBLC.

The Assistant Director, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre works closely with and reports directly to the Associate University Librarian and Director, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. Works with a broad range of partners and stakeholders including the UBC Library, campus units, community service organizations and agencies and representatives from the education and government sectors. The Assistant Director interacts and consults with relevant individuals at UBC Library relating to information technology, facilities, human resources, and development. The Assistant Director cooperates with the other Heads and AULs in the provision of programs and services.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:
- Ensures programs and services support the Statement of Purpose and Charter of Principles of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, with a focus on the Learning Centre’s outreach and engagement activities. Helps to foster community engagement activities across the UBC Library.
- Responsible for the planning, implementation, management, and assessment of programs offered through the Learning Centre, including IKBLC Program Services, the Chapman Learning Commons and the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication. Works directly with these teams to contribute to the vision and mission of IKBLC and its stakeholders, including UBC Library.
- Provides leadership for the librarians and staff in IKBLC Program Services, the Chapman Learning Commons and the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication. Participates in the recruitment and selection of librarians and staff. Manages organizational planning, conducts annual reviews, assesses and recommends training and learning opportunities, makes merit recommendations and engages with librarians and staff through open dialogue.
- Enables an environment that is collegial, based on mutual trust and respect, is open and supportive, and that creates a positive and effective work environment for employees and patrons. This environment will be built on appreciation, recognition, learning and professional growth, where everyone is able to listen, contribute and engage with colleagues and ideas and provide and receive timely, constructive feedback.
- Works closely with the Facilities Management team, Library units and campus partners to ensure the Learning Centre’s spaces offer innovative technologies to support 21st century learners, are welcoming and accessible to a broad range of users including community members, and works with other campus partners to position the Learning Centre as a key gateway to the UBC Library and Vancouver campus. Addresses and monitors facility issues of concern.
- Prepares budgets and annual reports, sets priorities, allocates resources, and is accountable for the use of resources related to the Chapman Learning Commons, Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication, community outreach and engagement initiatives, public spaces, and special projects.
- Participates in the long-term planning and development of the Learning Centre and assessment of resource requirements.
- Participates in the development of policies and procedures for IKBLC.
- Manages the on-going development and maintenance of IKBLC website and related websites.
- Supports fund raising initiatives in IKBLC and participates in the preparation of grant requests and administration of grants.
- Supports IKBLC campus and community communications when appropriate.
- Participates in professional and university-wide activities.
- Other activities as appropriate or assigned.
Takes a collaborative and innovative approach to the development and evolution of user-centred services and spaces offered by IKBLC. Effectively manages and supports a team of professional and support staff. Works within and assists in the formulation of policies and procedures for the successful operation of IKBLC. Stays informed about current developments in library and information studies, community development practices, learning commons, writing centres and related fields including information technology, knowledge transfer and scholarly publishing. Works effectively as a member of a team. Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrates flexibility, enthusiasm and willingness to work in a rapidly changing environment. Actively supports and assists in the evolution of the IKBLC’s programs, services and spaces. Understands and is able to assist in the operationalization of the Statement of Purpose and Charter of Principles for the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and the strategic plans of the Library and University.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
