Job Description:

The Social Sciences Librarian serves as a liaison for the Maxwell School and select social science departments at the University, ensuring that Libraries’ collections and services support the academic and research needs of students and faculty in those units. The incumbent provides essential services, including research assistance, information literacy instruction, and collection development, and serves as the Libraries’ point of contact for the assigned areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as librarian and liaison to programs located in the Maxwell School and select social science programs within the College of Arts & Sciences. These programs supports undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level curricula, many of which are related to professional programs.
  • Provide information and research services.
  • Provide in-depth research support (conduct one-on-one research consultations, provide subject-based reference services, research reputation management, etc.) in assigned disciplines. Provide a full range of general and multi-disciplinary information services including consultative, referral, phone, by-appointment, and digital reference services.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary library teams as assigned and work collaboratively and creatively to implement and enhance programmatic services that benefit the liaison areas and the University.
  • Develop and provide specialized online and in-person information literacy instruction for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff
  • Create and maintain subject-related information and instructional materials
  • Participate in the marketing, development, implementation, assessment, and provision of outreach programs for Libraries services
  • Develop professional relationships with faculty and researchers in appropriate schools, colleges, and departments in order to assess and respond to research and teaching needs
  • Work with faculty and Libraries colleagues to develop and market relevant Libraries services for interdisciplinary areas where Maxwell and the Social Sciences are strongly involved
  • Select materials in coordination with Collection Development and Analysis Librarians, and perform other relevant discipline-specific collections activities as needed
  • Interpret and communicate findings obtained from outreach with constituents using well-defined library communication channels
  • Promote open-access and effective publishing models as relevant to furthering the mission of the university
  • Engage in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the university, and the library profession
  • Maintain awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that increase one’s knowledge and abilities, and that positively impact one’s performance and service contributions

Qualifications

  • MLS (ALA-accredited) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least three years of professional experience as a librarian
  • At least one year focused on instruction
  • At least one year focused on serving the Social Sciences
  • Graduate work, degree or other relevant experience in Social Sciences preferred
  • Experience working with distance students preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial, multi-disciplinary team environment to explore and promote the application of new technologies
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Library instruction or classroom teaching experience at a professional level
  • Demonstrated success in providing excellent public service to students, faculty, and researchers
  • Commitment to providing responsible and innovative services to a culturally/racially diverse campus
