Law Library Director University of Iowa College of Law The University of Iowa College of Law seeks applicants for the position of Law Library Director. Founded in 1868 with a collection of 612 books, the Law Library today holds more than 1.5 million volumes and volume equivalents, giving it one of the most comprehensive collections of print, electronic, and microform materials among university-affiliated law libraries in the United States. As one of the best places in North America to do legal research, the Law Library plays a central role in the teaching, scholarly, and service missions of both the College of Law and the larger University. (For more about the Law Library’s evolution from humble beginnings to rare jewel, see https://library.law.uiowa.edu/history-library.) Building on the Law Library’s extraordinary strengths, the Director will lead the effort to shape and implement a compelling strategic vision for the next chapters of the Law Library’s story. To accomplish that task, the Director should possess the ability to think creatively and incisively about how best to meet the needs of the Law Library’s future constituents; foster an environment that encourages high-quality scholarship and teaching; participate actively in the intellectual life of the College of Law; advocate effectively for the Law Library; build and sustain constructive partnerships with the University of Iowa Libraries and other on- and off-campus stakeholders; supervise and foster the professional development of a diverse and talented staff; manage a complex budget and make wise resource-allocation judgments; and evaluate emerging research-related technologies. The Director may also carry a small teaching load negotiated with the Dean. A candidate for the position of Law Library Director must possess the following qualifications:
  • excellent academic credentials, including both a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and a Master of Library and Information Science (or the equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program;
  • a demonstrated ability to carry out the duties of the Law Library Director;
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • a thoughtful commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in ways relevant to the Law Library Director’s duties.
The new Director will report to the Dean of the College of Law. The Director’s rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment with tenure is possible if the Director already has a distinguished teaching, publication, and service record that meets the standard tenure requirements for all tenured College of Law faculty. The College’s chief aim, however, is to recruit a leader and faculty colleague who will execute the Director’s administrative and teaching responsibilities with great effectiveness. The College thus eagerly welcomes applications from qualified individuals whose appointment would be under a renewable long-term contract. To apply, please submit a detailed cover letter, a C.V., and the names of at least three references at https://jobs.uiowa.edu/faculty/view/73802.
