TEMPORARY RESEARCH & ENGAGEMENT LIBRARIAN IN HUMANITIES OR SOCIAL SCIENCES (Assistant or Associate) The University of California, Santa Barbara, is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The UCSB Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries. The UCSB Library seeks a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to support current and emerging research strategies and methods of scholarly communication by providing research and instructional services. The expected effective date of this position is January 1, 2020 or later. The temporary Research & Engagement Librarian will be appointed for a term of two years. Reporting to the Director of Research & Engagement, this librarian works in a team-based environment to provide research support and information literacy instruction to academic departments and programs in the humanities or social sciences. Contributes to general reference services aimed at the campus community and beyond.  This includes in-person research consultations, referrals, Ask-a-Librarian virtual service, email, and other. Contributes to the design and delivery of orientations, workshops, and outreach activities that introduce students to the Library’s services, resources, and spaces. Promotes Library collections, services, and spaces, and seeks feedback to increase their effectiveness. RESPONSIBILITIES Engages in proactive outreach and communications with assigned academic departments. Provides research consultations in person and virtually to faculty and students engaged in traditional and emerging research practices in the humanities or social sciences. Works collaboratively with the Library’s Data Curation Program and Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory to support evolving needs in conducting data-intensive research and digital scholarship. Mentors undergraduate students involved in sustained research projects. Facilitates opportunities for faculty and students to share their scholarship and learning via the UCSB Library. Supports scholars at all stages in making their research broadly accessible, managing their scholarly data, and understanding their rights as authors. Designs and teaches course-integrated information literacy sessions using the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and other disciplinary standards. Advises faculty on assignment design and learning outcomes related to information literacy. In partnership with Teaching & Learning Librarians, works with assigned departments and programs to incorporate information literacy learning outcomes into the curriculum. Promotes collections, databases, primary source material, and other resources through the creation of online guides and digital or physical exhibitions. Assists Collection Strategists in the development and management of collections in assigned subject areas. QUALIFICATIONS Basic:
  • At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
Additional:
  • Demonstrated academic background or knowledge of the humanities or social sciences, as evidenced by undergraduate or graduate coursework, or work experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in reference and library instruction, as evidenced by undergraduate or graduate coursework, or work experience; and
  • Excellent written communication skills.
Preferred:
  • Excellent oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Understanding of current and emerging trends in Humanities or Social Science research;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse campus communities, and with library staff from diverse cultural backgrounds in a dynamic and complex organization;
  • A strong commitment to excellence in public service;
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community;
  • At least two years of experience in an academic library;
  • Academic background or knowledge of Film and Media Studies or similar, as demonstrated through undergraduate or graduate coursework, or work experience;
  • Chat reference experience; and
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication and publishing issues.
SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
