Position Summary The Southern Historical Collection in the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries is seeking a project archivist to support efforts to evaluate, appraise, and improve access to backlog collections. The Project Archivist will work closely with archivists in Technical Services and the Southern Historical Collection to facilitate and coordinate activities that will enable better description, access, and stewardship of selected collections. The individual in this position will facilitate appraisal of backlog materials; troubleshoot complex collection management issues; identify collections and additions to be prioritized for additional arrangement and description; ensure that control files are complete; ensure that accession records are complete and accurate; participate in rehousing, labeling, and shelving collections materials; separating digital and audiovisual materials and prioritizing their reformatting and/or rehousing; creating or verifying box lists; and facilitating the disposition of collection discards.

This work will require outstanding organization and collaboration abilities and a strong foundation in archival best practices. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about collecting and collections management in a large special collections library.

Funding for this position is contingent. Currently, projected funding for this position is two years.

Educational Requirements ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or advanced subject degree in a relevant field

Qualifications and Experience REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or advanced subject degree in a relevant field. Working knowledge of standard special collections library procedures and best practices typically acquired through at least one year of relevant working experience. Demonstrated ability to excel both independently and as a team member in a collaborative working environment. Excellent time management and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills. Strong project management skills.

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Prior experience working in an academic research library. Prior experience in the acquisition, storage, and dissemination of historical and archival materials.
