Department: Collection Management & Scholarly Communication Rank and Salary: Associate Librarian to Librarian ($61,201 - $101,535) Position Availability: Immediately Application deadline for first consideration: January 16, 2020   The UCLA Library seeks a collaborative, motivated, and knowledgeable librarian to serve as the Head of Preservation & Conservation. The incumbent will contribute enthusiasm, expertise, and strategic insight to the complex, collaborative work of caring for the diverse collections that support and advance the research and curricular priorities of a dynamic, world-renowned University.   Position Duties Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Management & Scholarly Communication, the Head of Conservation & Preservation has overall responsibility for the administration and implementation of the preservation and conservation activities for the UCLA Library’s special and general collections, in accord with the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice. The Head oversees a staff responsible for a broad range of activities—including preventive care, conservation assessment and treatment of collections, support for exhibition, loan and digitization programs, documentation, health and safety policies, outreach, and community engagement—and works closely with staff throughout UCLA to ensure the smooth integration and timely completion of conservation and preservation activities.   Specific duties and responsibilities include:
  • Provides strategic and administrative leadership for the Preservation & Conservation Department, including strategic planning, setting unit and departmental priorities, budget management, and developing and maintaining disaster response plans
  • Supervises and mentors senior staff and special collections conservation specialists, and provides general supervision for all staff and student employees
  • Provides oversight of technical preservation and conservation operations and activities; oversees, manages, or executes the best practice conservation treatments which follow the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice for special collections materials, and advises on circulating collection conservation treatment
  • Coordinates and makes appropriate delegations of administrative responsibilities and activities to departmental staff, that ensure effective engagement and collaboration with all library units in the support of long-term access to and preservation of collections, including
    • environmental monitoring
    • collection security
    • statistical and narrative reports
    • training in best practices in preservation and conservation
    • participation in interdepartmental and/or library-wide efforts, including teams, working groups, and committees, and ensures effective communication about such activities
  • Manages and develops the Preservation & Conservation Department cost-recovery program, to assist, as feasible, with the preservation and conservation needs of non-library UCLA collecting units, southern region UC libraries, and southern California non-profit organizations and cultural heritage institutions
  • Identifies and pursues grant opportunities
  • Contributes to development activities
  • Pursues research and publishing in areas of professional interest
  • Leads and coordinates departmental outreach efforts and community engagement programs and activities
  • Represents the UCLA Library locally, in system-wide preservation advisory groups, regional networks, and national forums related to preservation and conservation
