As a forward thinking and imaginative leader, the Dean will provide thoughtful academic and administrative leadership while identifying future areas of growth and building strong interdisciplinary connections across the Library and the University. The Dean will foster an environment conducive to academic quality, collegiality, student success, technical innovation, and transparency, while fostering an appreciation for diversity and inclusion.

With a diversity of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn-by-doing philosophy. Cal Poly Pomona is nestled in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley less than 30 miles east of Los Angeles at the intersection of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the largest four counties in the State. It is within an hour’s drive of beaches, mountains, and desert. The largest employer in the region, the university is located in one of the most important commercial regions in Southern California, comprised of numerous manufacturing, warehouse, and retail businesses. The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. The university’s nearly 26,000 students are enrolled in 51 baccalaureate and 30 master’s degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership Program. Students are taught by approximately 1,300 faculty. A Hispanic-Serving Institution, the university is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the tenth most diverse in the western region, and the celebration of the diversity of its students, faculty, and staff is integral to the University’s identity. The University Library collection totals 2.4 million items including 644,000 volumes, 1.5 million microforms, and 13,000 maps. The University Library also has a large collection of eResources, including 20,300 online periodicals, 17,000 ebooks, and 180 databases. The University Library serves the University in achieving its mission to educate students through a polytechnic model. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as a member of the Provost’s Council, and works closely with others across the campus to advance the goals and priorities of the University Library and University. The Dean is responsible for all areas of library administration including policy and program development, strategic and long-range planning, fiscal management, personnel supervision, integration of emerging technologies, and development of collaborative relationships. As the academic leader of the Library, the Dean oversees the Director of Library Operations and Development, faculty (librarians), and staff. The Dean is expected to promote collaboration, team building, and the active engagement of faculty, staff, students, and community partners. The successful Dean candidate will be an experienced academic administrator with at least five years of responsible academic or senior industry administrative experience, with knowledge of strategic planning, budgeting, and assessment. The successful candidate will have an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science (or equivalent), and have served as a faculty member in a comprehensive or research university or equivalent industry. The next Dean will bring a command of emerging trends in higher education and library administration, and demonstrated ability at leading diverse populations. The successful candidate will possess strong oral and written skills, a collaborative leadership style and negotiating skills, and demonstrated effectiveness in promoting the Library to external stakeholders. A thorough understanding and knowledge of the use of technology to deliver and enhance user-centered library services is strongly preferred.
