The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill helps library users find, evaluate, and use information in today’s rapidly transforming digital environment. We seek a creative, resourceful, and highly collaborative Outreach Projects Librarian to help the University Libraries fulfill this mission through its expanding outreach and engagement program.

Reporting to the Community Engagement and Outreach Librarian, the Outreach Projects Librarian will harness an understanding of the role of today’s libraries and librarians, knowledge of the resources and strengths of the University Libraries, and familiarity with library patron behavior to forge and deepen strategic connections with diverse constituencies. These activities will help students, faculty, and community members meet their research, learning, and personal goals, and to participate in civic life and the life of the community.

The Outreach Projects Librarian will help conceptualize, implement, and evaluate in-person and online experiences that enable discovery, enrichment, and multi-faceted engagement with the University Libraries and its collections, services, spaces, and expertise. The librarian will develop, implement, and provide pan-library leadership for digital content strategies, especially social media content, that guide users toward the effective use of library resources, spaces, services, and materials. The librarian will deepen the University Libraries’ commitment to student success by promoting and preparing students for civic responsibility and participation through research and the use of information resources.

Principal responsibilities:

  • Identifies needs and opportunities for library engagement with campus and community library users and potential users.
  • With the Community Engagement and Outreach Librarian, conceptualizes, implements, and evaluates activities, projects, and initiatives that advance research, learning, personal growth, and civic engagement.
  • Devises, implements, and leads a Library-wide social media presence and strategy rooted in the University Libraries’ core pillars of preservation, student success, and enabling the research enterprise, and its values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Identifies and responds to reference inquiries that arrive via social media.
  • Supervises students and interns.
  • Participates in and contributes to the activities of the Library Communications Office.
  • Represents the University Libraries in and contributes to campus, local, regional, and national organizations.
  • Serves on or participates in University Libraries, University, and professional organizations, committees, task forces, and teams.

REQUIRED Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or a related advanced degree.
  • Commitment to the values of librarianship and of the University Libraries, and appreciation for the potential of libraries to enhance campus community, promote student success, sustain democracy, and transform lives.
  • Ability to learn about the activities, strengths, and opportunities of the University Libraries and the Libraries’ relationship to the campus and the community.
  • Familiarity with applications and resources relevant to a large academic library (e.g., catalogs, finding aids, online resources, subject guides).
  • Demonstrated applied mastery of digital communications, especially norms, trends, and best practices in the use of social media for audience engagement.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access and to the expression of these values in library work and the responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience teaching and instructing peers.
  • Collegial, collaborative, creative, and entrepreneurial outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of a team and to work productively with diverse colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and time-management skills.

PREFERRED Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Experience working in a library, cultural organization, or educational environment.
  • Photography, videography, and/or livecasting skills for social media.
  • Competency in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud or other production software.
  • Familiarity with principles of accessible design.

Salary and Benefits This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
