This is a 100% twelve-month, tenure-system appointment. Position Description The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is looking for a creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic professional for the position of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Librarian. Reporting to the Head of the Undergraduate Library, this position leads a large course-integrated instructional program serving classes meeting the campus-wide Composition I requirements. The incumbent will teach, assess, and train pre-professional graduate assistants to provide in-class instruction for this program, totaling over 300 individual class sessions serving more than 6000 students each academic year. The successful candidate will collaborate with campus program coordinators on the design of Library classes and online learning materials to support student learning and the integration of information literacy concepts. The incumbent will work collaboratively with library colleagues on coordinated efforts to address campus needs for Undergraduate teaching and learning, including leadership of cross-disciplinary class support for courses meeting the campus Advanced Composition requirement.  In concert with peers, the Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Librarian will investigate opportunities to integrate Library instructional services into campus initiatives and platforms for Undergraduate learning. This position will serve on Library and campus committees and working groups to collaboratively develop successful models for implementing Library instructional content into Undergraduate learning. The successful candidate will be a team-oriented individual who is organized, can meet deadlines, and possesses a proven record of success in designing and teaching Undergraduate-focused instruction in an academic library environment. As part of the Undergraduate Library, this position will contribute to unit planning efforts, provide reference services as part of a shared reference model, supervise and mentor pre-professional graduate assistants, and lead projects in support of unit and Library goals.   • Collaborate with Library colleagues to create and implement instructional programming for courses fulfilling the Advanced Composition Requirement
  • Create multimodal instructional content and tailored research guides to address the research needs of a culturally diverse undergraduate student body
  • Conduct assessments of student learning and Undergraduate instruction program needs, at the Library and campus level
  • Hire, train, mentor, and supervise a team of approximately 10 graduate assistants for pre-professional Library duties
  • Supervise one full time instruction staff member in the unit
  • Participate in public services and other user-focused activities as part of the Undergraduate Library team, including library-wide reference services
  • Engage in professional development to stay abreast of national and campus trends for inclusive teaching and learning practices
  • Participate in Library-wide committees, task forces, and related leadership assignments
  • Contributes to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service and collaboration with national colleagues and organizations
  • Fulfill responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students.
  • QualificationsRequired Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent advanced degree;
  • Minimum two years of post-degree professional experience teaching in an academic library setting
  • Experience working collaboratively with campus faculty in the design and delivery of instructional content
  • Experience in instructional design including integration of learning outcomes into course content
  • Experience with assessing instructional program effectiveness
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with people of diverse identities and backgrounds, as gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching or other comparable experiences
  • Demonstrated experience in the creation of online learning objects, such as course and/or research guides
  • Preparation and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a tenure-track faculty appointment and indications of ability to meet the promotion and tenure requirements of the University
  • PreferredThree or more years of post-degree professional experience teaching in an academic library setting
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience integrating formal course content into a learning management system
  • Experience creating multimedia learning objects, including videos
  • Experience or aptitude for providing in-person or digital reference services
  • Prior leadership experience of a comprehensive course-integrated library instruction program

Environment: The Undergraduate Library celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019 and continues to be a vibrant and lively center of activity for students on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Known for its diverse services and experimental approach, highlights of the Undergraduate Library include an embedded writing center, instructional classrooms, a Media Commons and loanable technology program providing multimedia content creation and production services, recording studios, and a collection of unique popular culture materials. The current staff includes 3 librarians, 15 civil service and academic professional positions, and 10 graduate assistants from the iSchool. Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience. Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion. Library faculty have an obligation to remain professionally informed, to pursue the discovery of new knowledge related to their field of expertise, to disseminate the results of their scholarly work, and to seek opportunities for service to the Library, campus, state, nation and profession.
