English and Communications Librarian

The University of Iowa Libraries Humanities & Social Sciences Dept English and Communications Librarian Specialist Librarian (PLB2/4A)   The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an English and Communications Librarian. As a liaison to English, Communications and the School of Journalism, the librarian is responsible for instruction, collection development, and research support, as well as other liaison duties as required, for the faculty, staff and students in these units. The librarian supports the initiatives of the University, the University of Iowa Libraries, and the UI Libraries Humanities and Social Sciences Department. These initiatives often require serving on campus committees and library teams, volunteering for activities, and collaborating on projects. The English and Communications Librarian reports to the head of the UI Libraries Humanities and Social Sciences Department. As a member of the UI Libraries Humanities & Social Sciences Department, the librarian provides general reference for the Main Library including consultations and answering instant messaging inquiries. The librarian contributes to an open environment supporting diversity, equality and inclusion. Specific Responsibilities:

• Student Success: Contribute to student success in English, Communication Studies and Journalism by teaching information literacy, critical thinking skills, research methods, and citation styles and management; create and maintain guides and other learning platform resources; assist with faculty curricular development; attend departmental events and stay in regular contact with faculty and students, in support of relevant departments.
• Research and Discovery: Provide research assistance for students, staff and faculty in English, Communications and Journalism by providing research consultations and instruction and developing workshops on relevant library services and resources. It is expected that the librarian will work closely with the Digital Studio and Scholarly Impact Department to support Digital Humanities and Social Sciences research. This position will manage the funds for English, Communication Studies and Journalism, and will continuously assess collections and resource needs for faculty, staff and students in the assigned disciplines.
• Engagement: Provide outreach to campus and Iowa City community by promoting library resources through programs, exhibits and other outreach activities. Serve on Library Teams to support initiatives and projects for the Libraries.
• Professional Contribution: Maintain a course of personal professional development through active participation in professional associations or other appropriate professional activity.

The University of Iowa Libraries system consists of the Main Library, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and a number of branch libraries. The UI Libraries has more than 5.7 million volumes including thousands of electronic resources.  We coordinate the development and maintenance of the University’s locally-created open access digital resources including the Iowa Digital Library, featuring close to a million digitized texts, images, and audio and video recordings, as well as Iowa Research Online, our institutional repository. Our Special Collections include over 250,000 rare books, ranging in age from the 15^th century to newly created artists’ books, as well as 4.7 miles of manuscripts. We also host the Greater Midwestern Regional Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The University of Iowa Libraries is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of Research Libraries and a variety of other regional and national collaboratives focused on information services at scale.  The Libraries provides a program of support for professional development activities and its staff members are actively engaged in national cooperative efforts.  The Libraries are a founding member of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Diversity Alliance.   Qualifications Education Required

• Master’s in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution.

Experience Required

• Two years of professional experience including some collection development work and a demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate's value to the Libraries, the University, the profession, or the scholarly community.
• Knowledge of current developments in information literacy instruction and scholarly communication.
• Experience with, or demonstrated knowledge of, current and emerging technologies as they apply to collection development, instruction, and research services.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, creativity, collaboration and cooperation are essential.
• Demonstrated effective communication skills and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated understanding of the mission of a research university and the mission and functions of a large research library.

Desired Qualifications

• Advanced degree in English, Communications or related discipline.
