Library Systems & Emerging Technologies Lead Job/Position Summary: The Library Systems & Emerging Technologies Lead provides expertise and leadership for the effective use of information technology in the University Library, including enterprise-level and locally-developed hardware and software applications and the full use of the University's infrastructure and IT services. The Lead works with Library management to develop strategies for the Library’s next generation of information services, and works with colleagues across the Library to implement and coordinate systems projects. S/he also works closely with the Library’s Systems Coordinator to ensure the Library’s current and future information systems are working effectively and efficiently. Major Responsibilities – include but are not limited to - • Participates in strategic planning for current and proposed Library systems, providing technical insight and expert opinion on the Library’s operations and new initiatives. • Supervises Library’s Systems team to oversee and manage different library systems; this may include evaluating and implementing new components and/or systems, providing configuration and support for existing components, and performing systems maintenance tasks on the ILS. • Provides leadership, integration and coordination for the Library’s online presence; this includes the Library’s primary website, resource discovery systems, locally-developed web-services, intranet systems, and supplemental services such as LibGuides, LibAnswers, etc. • Develops and maintains documentation for relevant library systems and software. • Compiles and interprets statistics and prepares reports on systems performance. • Provides written reports, assessments, analyses, and documentation as needed and upon request. • Represents the Library’s interests in University meetings and events, as required by the Library’s management team. Attends relevant regional and international conferences, representing the Library through networking and topical presentations. • Builds small teams and manages projects to research, test, and assess evolving or innovative information technologies. Creates, tests, procures, installs, and evaluates a variety of applications to ensure they meet expectations and adhere to university standards. Creates and/or edits programs to improve and/or integrate existing systems and applications. If appropriate, works with staff to transfer newly developed applications from development to production environments and establish support practices. • Researches new developments and makes recommendations for best practices in library and information technologies and maintains current awareness of trends and issues relative to library information technology and supported applications. • Other duties as assigned, including Infodesk hours and evening shifts. Competencies: Required: • Demonstrated proficiency in commonly used business and library-related software; working with data-source driven applications; demonstrated technical experience in at least one IT domain, e.g. system administration, web services, programming. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, to set and meet deadlines, and to adapt to new and changing situations, priorities and technologies; excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organization, and problem-solving skills; ability and desire to work with diverse groups of individuals including students, staff and faculty; strong initiative and ability to function independently and as a contributing member of a team. • Interest and exposure to evolving technologies in academic libraries, such as linked data and next-generation resource discovery tools. • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in library information services and the broader information technology field. • Competency in systems administration and shell scripting in Linux environments. Familiarity with version control systems, such as SVN or GitHub. • Broad understanding of academic research library operational functions, including but not restricted to technical services (acquisitions, metadata management, and print/digital resource management), access and delivery services, public computing management, and outreach/event management functions. • Familiarity with library-oriented standards and protocols such as FRBR, MARC/AACR2, Z39.50, OAI-PMH, RDA, Dublin Core, PREMIS, etc. Preferred: • Demonstrated experience with application programming languages (Python, Java), scripting (PHP, Perl, Shell, JavaScript), SQL and systems administration commands; web markup specifications (HTML, CSS and XML/XSL); familiarity with current web authoring languages, multimedia tools, editing/authoring tools and related website technologies; project management certification; prior experience working in an academic research library. Qualifications: Required: • BA/BS in computer science related field, MSc is preferred. • At least Five (5) years of professional IT experience is required, preferably in an academic research library.
