Collection Strategist Librarian (Associate or Full Librarian) The University of California, Santa Barbara, is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The University Library at UC Santa Barbara is a member of the Association of Research Libraries. The expected effective date of this position is November 1, 2020 or later. DESCRIPTION The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, forward-looking, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as Collection Strategist Librarian with an emphasis on the humanities or social sciences. Reporting to the Director of Collection Strategies, the position will be one of a team of two Collection Strategists, an Analytics Coordinator, and a Library Assistant. The Strategist contributes to the allocation of Library resources for the acquisition and management of diverse collections. The Strategist will work collaboratively and closely with other Library departments, and with faculty and students in a highly interdisciplinary research community renowned for its academic excellence and global impact. The University of California Libraries have a long history of collaboration on developing transformative licensing agreements and pooling resources for digital resources to ensure that all UC faculty, students and staff, regardless of their location, have access to library collections that meet the high research and teaching standards of an eminent research university. In addition to shared digital collections, the UC libraries' shared print collection further optimizes the management of and access to information resources for students and faculty. The UC Libraries are currently planning the implementation of the UC’s first-ever system-wide integrated library system (SILS) resulting in an improved end-user experience in discovering and accessing UC’s vast physical and electronic collections. The University of California Libraries is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in advancing Open Access and is well on its way to integrating its open values into its collection strategies. As part of the Collection Strategies Department, the incumbent will have the opportunity to lead the reshaping of the Library’s strategic approach to collections and to cultivate a culture of assessment for a broader concept of library content that includes general research collections and advocacy for Open Access. The mission of the Collection Strategies Department is to define and implement strategic approaches that effectively steward the library’s investment in research collections and scholarly content, and to increase the impact and reach of the UCSB’s scholarship by actively supporting, innovating, and advancing open and sustainable models for knowledge generation, dissemination, and publishing. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general direction of the Director of Collection Strategies and working with the Collection Strategies team, the Collection Strategist Librarian: Gathers, analyzes, manages, interprets, and reports data from the library’s integrated system, multiple vendor platforms, the UC California Digital Library, and external organizations to make decisions that enhance effectiveness and sustainability of the library’s electronic and print resources and optimally align collections with the mission of the University; and monitors local, system-wide, and vendor-provided reports to identify collection-related trends and patterns. Implements innovative models and approaches to collection content that effectively steward the library’s investment in collections; develops frameworks and leads the coordination for evidence-based content acquisition, management, and assessment across formats and delivery platforms; and participates in developing methodologies that promote best practices in making informed collection development and management decisions and conducts regular content use reviews. Contributes to budget planning and oversees funding allocations for the Library’s general collections; and guides evidence-based collection development and management decisions, designs assessment strategies based on quantitative and qualitative data to inform the strategic allocation of the Library’s collections budget, as well as the selection and management of research resources and content, including print, digital, media, data, and other emerging formats. Evaluates opportunities and makes recommendations for redirecting the library’s investment in collections to resources with the greatest potential for transforming the system of scholarly communication toward open dissemination of research. Consults with liaison librarians and subject specialists on collection development decisions; provides assessment and analysis support to subject specialists and liaison librarians including data metrics informing the selection of library materials across all formats; and gathers, analyzes, and presents collections-related data from the library’s integrated system, multiple vendor platforms to be used in decision making regarding additions, renewals, and cancellations of UC shared content. Represents UCSB on system-wide committees and ad-hoc groups related to collections initiatives; and participates in professional development activities as appropriate to meet both personal needs as well as departmental goals and objectives. QUALIFICATIONS Basic: At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science. Additional: Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by submitted materials including the CV, Cover Letter, and an optional but encouraged statement of diversity; and Proven skills to gather, manage, assess, interpret, and present quantitative and qualitative data for varied audiences as demonstrated by work experience. Preferred: High level of proficiency with Excel, OpenRefine, and other software applications to manage and present data; Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in current, evolving, and innovative models of collection development and scholarly communication; Experience in collection development and management in an academic library including creation of collection development and management policies and strategies; Experience using the acquisition functions of an ILS system to make informed collections related decisions; Experience with electronic resources management and licensing; Aptitude for learning and adapting emerging technologies; Experience working with a large academic consortium; Demonstrated organizational skills sufficient to balance multiple priorities, deadlines, and changing project parameters; Evidence of flexibility and initiative when working within a fast-paced, changing environment; Demonstrated commitment to professional development; Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to engage with colleagues from diverse backgrounds; and Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
