The position provides strategic directions to the collections team and serves as the primary liaison between the Library and assigned academic programs and research centers. Major responsibilities As the Team Lead • Manage the subject specialists and associated staff. • Lead the collection team in selecting, building, and evaluating collections in print and digital formats to support the KAUST academic research mission. • Manage reference and instructional services to ensure best practices and alignment with the international standards to support student success. • Plan, implement, and evaluate a diverse range of engagement and campus outreach initiatives, programming, and instructional support. • Lead efforts in library advocacy and training of the research community about scholarly communications issues. • Administer and prepare LibGuides and online instructional materials, and train other subject specialists in the use of these tools. Collection Development • Assume overall responsibility for the development of the collection in the subject areas for the assigned KAUST academic division and research centers. • Assess the level and quality of the library collection including databases and other electronic products from publishers in assigned subject areas, and benchmark it with the peers. • Select materials in all formats, review requests, book reviews, and other collection development sources, to initiate orders. • Gather and analyze usage statistics to aid collection development decisions, policies, procedures, and workflows. • Develop collection development strategies for assigned subject areas in consultation with faculty and other subject specialists. Outreach & Research Support • Build effective working relationships with the faculty to gain knowledge of academic and research programs, ensuring that collections and services support the curriculum and research needs. • As part of a working group, engage with faculty and researchers on research data management (RDM), and identify content for KAUST digital repository and special collections. Reference and Instruction • Provide specialized research assistance/consultation services in assigned subject areas, in person, online, and at InfoDesk. • Active involvement in online reference services and LibAnswers. • As part of the Collections and Research Support team-teach information literacy workshops and classes to students and faculty. • Creation, updating, embedding, and marketing of e-learning course modules and video tutorials to supplement library training initiatives. • Assess and improve instructional activities to ensure best practices and alignment with the international standards to support student success. Scholarly Communication Support • Educate and advocate research community and others about scholarly communications issues, including author rights, open access; seek an understanding of changing workflows and scholarly communications practices among faculty; • Track developments in open-access academic publishing and discuss open access agreements with academic publishers. • Act as a liaison for open access, communicating with KAUST authors, and presenting them OA possibilities with academic publishers. • Gather and analyze open access publishing data of KAUST authors, assess this data, and propose the next steps in this area. Other Responsibilities • Contribute to a dynamic, collegial University Library team supportive of the university’s goals. • Active participation in local and international partnerships with libraries, publishers, information services providers, cultural institutions, and scholarly societies and organizations to market, share, and continually improve information services. • Plan and conduct staff training in the use of library resources. • Assist with the development of service policies and procedures including e-resources, circulation, course management systems, and a repository of digital assets. • Participate in the integration of library resources and services into course management systems. • Work at info desk including evening shifts and other duties as assigned. Competencies • Understands the processes and goals of library services in support of graduate science education and research. • Ability to work effectively with a variety of constituents including faculty, researchers, graduate students, fellow library staff, and vendors. • Fluent English reading and speaking skills. • Excellent communications, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. • Demonstrated experience in managing and supervising staff. • Ability to work independently and contribute constructively as a member of teams. Required Education: MLIS degree or equivalent. A second Master’s or Ph.D. degree is preferred. Required Experiences: • Minimum of seven-year experience in library collections, reference, instructions, and research services. • Demonstrated experience in providing STEM information services. • Working knowledge of modern information technology tools and applications. • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of best practices in STEM information services.
