The Cornell University Law Library seeks a Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian to join our dedicated team as a visionary and collaborative member of the Cornell Law Library, Cornell Law School, and Cornell University Library communities. The research and scholarly landscape is shifting, with increasing emphasis on digital resources, and multiple repositories for scholarship. This librarian will play a key role in the Law Library’s ongoing efforts to make our collection available and accessible to our community and will critically evaluate and manage the platforms on which faculty publications are published and promoted. Cornell Law School and the Library are committed to building antiracist and inclusive curricula, research resources, and services. One of this librarian’s early priorities will be to assist in implementing the Law Library's vision for and support of these initiatives. The Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian is also an Adjunct Professor of Law and teaches specific assigned courses further to Law School and Library need. This librarian may oversee other initiatives to advance Cornell University Library, Law School and Law Library priorities as they arise. This position reports to the Director for Collections, Faculty & Scholarly Services and will be filled at the Assistant or Senior Assistant Librarian level. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Research Resources and Scholarly Services The Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian collaborates with the Director for Collections and other Law Library and Cornell University Library personnel to manage and critically evaluate Law Library electronic resources. Responsibilities will include evaluation of online resources for selection and cancellation; oversight of trials, subscriptions, authentication, and related troubleshooting; evaluation and growth of antiracist and inclusive law library research and curricular collection resources; and maintenance and critical development of related resource guides and collection priorities elements. The Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian will participate in scholarly communications workflows of the library system. Responsibilities may include work with Cornell Law School scholarly output data; preparation of faculty bibliographies; and planning of legal and academic scholarship repository content and profiles, working in close coordination with Law Library Information Management and Cornell University Library colleagues. Inclusive Research and Teaching Resources Initiatives The Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian collaborates with the Associate Dean for Library Services and other colleagues to envision and advance more inclusive and antiracist curricula, collection resources and teaching materials. Immediate responsibilities will include research, collection, and creation of research and teaching resources and other reading materials related to race and the law and critical race theory; development of and regular updates to related research guides and instructional resources (including race-conscious teaching supplements for standard and newer law school courses); and development and presentation of instruction on topics related to inclusivity and antiracist law and pedagogy, including workshops for members of the Law School and Cornell University Library communities. Responsibilities will eventually include support to other programs and projects intended to further an inclusive academic environment. Reference and Research Services; Instruction; Liaison The Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian works as part of a collaborative team of Cornell Law Library research librarians to provide reference services virtually and, when possible, in-person; to deliver instruction in legal and law library research and related topics; and to participate in Law Library liaison and outreach programs within the Law School community. As an Adjunct Professor of Law, the Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian may participate in in-class 1L legal research instruction and may teach credit-bearing advanced legal research courses independently or with Law Library colleagues. Professional Development and University Service The Research Resources and Inclusivity Initiatives Librarian contributes to the intellectual and community life of the Law School and Law Library, including outreach and orientation activities and Cornell University Library committees. Promotion to additional librarian ranks reflects professional service and contributions to scholarship.
  • Required Qualifications: JD from an accredited program, or equivalent; or Master’s degree and combination of competencies such as are normally gained through a JD program; demonstrated ability to conduct and teach US legal research; demonstrated understanding of the language of the law and legal terminology demonstrated ability to interact with law school faculty, staff, and students; and demonstrated familiarity with US legal information databases and print resources Demonstrated commitment to law librarianship; and Familiarity with and interest in issues of critical race theory or race-conscious practice and critical literacy in legal information, legal education, or the legal system
  • Familiarity with and commitment to issues of diversity, inclusion, and antiracism or decolonization
  • Initiative and willingness to learn new skills
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively and flexibly; and Demonstrated experience in problem-solving and decision-making in a collaborative and coordinated planning environment
  • 0-5 years of professional experience in a law library, academic or research library, or legal research setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: ability to listen actively, speak and write clearly, and effectively present information and ideas to groups
  • Equivalencies may be considered
Preferred Skills and Qualifications: Recognizing these are important parts of the modern librarian skill set, familiarity with or interest in one or more of the following skills is preferred. Successful applications are not contingent upon these skills, and training will be offered:
  • MLIS from an ALA accredited institution, or equivalent degree
  • Management of licensed digital resources
  • Understanding of the scholarly publishing environment
  • Empirical research support and experience with data

Appointment Rank and Salary Range:  The academic rank for this position will be either Assistant or Senior Assistant Librarian and has a salary range of $55,000-$75,000. The incoming rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and education.
