The University of Toronto Libraries seeks an innovative, enthusiastic, collaborative, and knowledgeable professional to help shape the future development of scholarly resources and collections in support of the humanities at the University of Toronto. Reporting to the Associate Chief Librarian for Collections and Materials Management, UTL, the Coordinator, Humanities Collections will develop a sustained, coordinated approach to collection development and management activities in the Humanities collections for the central libraries and, working closely with colleagues across the system and on the East and West campuses, plan, implement, and oversee collaborative collections initiatives to support research and teaching in a large and complex landscape.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner across all three campuses on issues relating to collections and acquisitions, develop and implement best practices, priorities, and policies for collections in the framework of university and library strategic plans and in collaboration with collections colleagues on the St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough campuses
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Collection Services to negotiate product licenses and renewals, communicate with vendors, coordinate and monitor approval plans, and manage budgets
  • Work in cooperation with colleagues in Assessment and other key partners to coordinate, plan, and engage librarians working at all three campuses in regular collections assessment and evaluation projects
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Scholarly Communication to lead initiatives within the evolving publishing landscape, such as the development of pilots that test new business models
  • Facilitate and strengthen ties with the University’s humanities programs through collaboration with liaison librarians to do proactive outreach to faculty and students
  • Work with the collections team, User Services, and liaison librarians to understand the needs and trends in Humanities research and teaching at the University of Toronto
  • Help train librarians in understanding the collections management lifecycle
  • Work with colleagues across units and campuses at the University of Toronto by participating on relevant working groups and committees
  • Work with colleagues outside of the University of Toronto by participating in shared collection projects, professional organizations, at workshops, forums, interest groups etc. as appropriate.
  • May assume subject selection and liaison responsibilities as needed

Required Qualifications

  • A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
  • Experience developing and managing print and digital collections including maintaining approval plans, understanding license agreements, and negotiating with vendors
  • Track record of successful collaboration and consensus building and ability to work collaboratively in an organizationally complex and culturally diverse higher education setting
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, design, and implement collection assessment projects
  • Understanding of all stages in the collections lifecycle in digital, print and other formats
  • Understanding of the scholarly publishing landscape
  • Knowledge of library consortia and the concept of collaborative collections
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Outstanding service orientation and public service experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth
  • Strong evidence of a growth mindset: a librarian who demonstrates flexibility, creativity and resilience
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility in academic libraries

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in the humanities
  • Knowledge of languages other than English
  • Knowledge of digital humanities

Salary and Terms of Appointment

This is a permanent status stream position to be filled at the Librarian II or III level, based on experience. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
