The University of Toronto Libraries seeks a user-focused, forward-thinking, collaborative, and technologically adept librarian for the position of Curator of Digital Experience. Our digital spaces are a primary way for our users to connect with our services, resources, people and libraries, and the incumbent will provide ongoing strategic management of the UTL web space and content strategy, to ensure an excellent user experience for our students, faculty and staff, and efficient access to resources and services through our integrated digital library, in alignment with our overall communication strategy.
Reporting to the Associate Chief Librarian, Digital Strategy and Technology and supervising the ITS Web Services team, the incumbent will build strong relationships within the University of Toronto Libraries and its user community, and with peers in other institutions and organizations to orchestrate an excellent experience for users of the University of Toronto’s online library presence. Working with colleagues and stakeholders, the incumbent will use evidence-based methods to understand user needs and priorities.
Representative duties and projects may include:
- Coordinating digital library design work, including development of content requirements, functional requirements to support the production of page types, and templates for new digital content by UTL's web services team
- Using a full range of assessment data to understand user needs and make evidence-based plans for digital space development
- Working with technical and content managers and staff to coordinate the implementation of flexible, intelligent and well-integrated web content frameworks, and site navigation for library digital spaces.
- Collaborating on integrations that provide UTL services via teaching and learning venues such as the Quercus course management system, and incorporate external tools such as LibGuides
- Creating and maintaining content management guidelines, templates and best practices to ensure effective and coherent use of the library’s content delivery systems, ensuring that our digital library space meets high standards of content management and accessibility. This includes direct oversight and management of the LibGuides platform.
- Coordinating the distributed maintenance of UTL digital library content through instruction, documentation and consultation.
- Overseeing large-scale web redesign and platform migration projects, including specification of content requirements; development of page types and templates; and participation in selection of systems for the Libraries’ digital library infrastructure
- Investigation of emerging trends such as artificial intelligence and their impact on academic libraries; initiation of pilot projects/services as a result of that investigation
The successful candidate will have:
- A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
- Awareness of the importance of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility in academic libraries
- Experience in a content strategy role in a higher education environment
- Strong current working knowledge of:
- Best practices and trends in digital user experience research and design
- Content management, issue tracking, and collaboration tools such as Drupal, WordPress, LibGuides, Jira, Confluence and GitLab
- Relevant technical skills including HTML, CSS, analytics and assessment tools, and wireframing
- Experience using a collaborative approach to catalyze the development of user-centered policies and services with demonstrated outcomes
- Proven ability to lead effectively and collaboratively in teams that encompass a range of professional roles and knowledge
- Proven project management experience, time-management and organizational skills; ability to lead multiple concurrent projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills and creativity
- Working knowledge of standards and methods for producing accessible web content
- Work experience in a consortial higher education library environment
- Passion for great storytelling and systems thinking
- Instructional experience
Salary and Terms of Appointment
This is a permanent status stream position to be filled at the Librarian II or III level, based on experience. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
