Job Summary

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Outreach is a member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for advising the dean on matters related to instruction, subject librarian and archivist outreach activities, academic campus partnerships, library services, and faculty development. The Associate Dean is also responsible for ensuring the effective and strategic administration of the instruction program, public programming, assessment program, academic outreach activities, archives, special collections, records management, research data management, and digital/data curation services and ensuring that all initiatives meet the standard of excellence and are supported in pursuit of the strategic mission, vision, and goals of the Library and Georgia Tech.

Specific responsibilities of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Outreach include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee subject librarian/archivist outreach, instruction, public programming, assessment, Patent & Trademark, and Government Information programs and services;
  • Provide leadership of Campus Engagement & Scholarly Outreach and Archives, Special Collections, Records Management & Digital/Data Curation Services;  
  • Oversee Library academic services including: Data Visualization Lab, retroTECH computing, Innovation & Ideation Studio, Scholars Event Network, Digital Scholarship Commons, Teaching & Learning Studio, Faculty Research Zone, Dissertation Defense room, collaboration rooms, and other academic spaces and services;
  • Lead initiatives related to faculty and staff growth and development including faculty promotion processes, mentorship and coaching, and professional development opportunities;
  • Liaise, collaborate, and coordinate with various campus offices on matters related to the Library, instruction, curriculum, library faculty expertise, and academic campus partnerships
  • Advocate for and assist service owners with the development, implementation, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of services;
  • Lead collaborative efforts across the Library and Georgia Tech to develop and grow services, address issues, and support the Library as the heart of Georgia Tech’s scholarly community;
  • Advise and counsel the Dean, faculty, staff, and students, as appropriate;
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives that support the vision and mission of the Library and Georgia Tech;
  • Represent the Library and/or Dean at Institute and professional meetings and on committees on and off campus, as appropriate;
  • Supervise both faculty and staff, as assigned and approved by Faculty Affairs and/or GTHR;
  • Demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the Library and Georgia Tech communities and to collaborations on and off campus;
  • Commitment to creating a positive, equitable, diverse, and ethical workplace culture where the contributions and development of all people are valued; and
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the Library and Georgia Tech communities and an ability to collaborate on and off campus. The ideal candidate should have a strong record of project development and management, a successful history of managing people, and evidence of success in an administrative leadership role. The ideal candidate will be familiar with issues related to academic affairs, research libraries, archives, and community engagement and have the ability to navigate complex situations and personalities. The successful candidate will be expected to have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, a desire to work hard to achieve excellence for the Library, demonstrated strong leadership skills, and a commitment to creating a positive and ethical workplace culture. The successful candidate should have the education, experience, and dossier to support an appointment to a Librarian/Archivist III or above.

Faculty Status

Depending on qualifications the position will be appointed as a librarian or archivist and is subject to a review and promotion process. The incumbent will have an effort distribution of 50% administration, 30% in Librarianship/Archivist duties, 10% scholarship and/or creative endeavors, and 10% professional service.

Salary and rank commensurate with credentials and experience. This is a full-time, academic, non-tenure track faculty appointment.

Required Qualifications

  • A terminal degree in a discipline related to the position or a Master's degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Depending on the qualifications, faculty appointment will be appointed as a librarian or archivist, which at Georgia Tech is a non-tenure track member of the academic faculty.
  • A minimum of 10 years related library or higher education experience that includes a deep understanding of Libraries, Archives, and academic affairs.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership of teams, projects, and processes
  • Professional service, professional activity, and contributions to research and scholarship sufficient for appointment at the rank of Librarian/Archivist III or higher
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a diverse staff, foster collegiality, encourage change and innovation and engage people in the collaborative planning and delivery of people-centered, value-based, and data-driven services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, written and oral communications skills 
  • Strong commitment to engaging users and providing excellent public service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Librarian/Archivist experience in an academic library in a research institution
  • Demonstrated success writing and obtaining grants
  • Experience developing and delivering instruction and/or training
  • Ability to facilitate conversations with individual and groups of diverse stakeholders
