About the University of Toronto Libraries

The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions & Collections Services, and working collaboratively with collections and data librarians, Metadata Services, and Information Technology Services, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties in the acquisitions, licensing, access management, and analysis of the Library’s e-resource collections. This position is also responsible for collaborating with colleagues to communicate e-resource information, resolve issues related to e-resource access and management, and advance the values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility in acquisition of collections for UTL. The successful candidate will be part of the Library’s e-resource management team and will help shape, and continuously improve access to, electronic resources for library users.

Duties may include:

1. Work closely with collections librarians to support e-resource collection development
2. Review and negotiate e-resource and data license agreements with publishers/vendors to reach favourable pricing and licensing terms
3. Coordinate e-resource and data acquisition and renewal activities with publishers/vendors and staff
4. Coordinate serials orders and renewals
5. Assist the Head of Acquisitions & Collections Services with acquisition of content licensed through consortia agreements
6. Work collaboratively with metadata services to manage and maintain accurate information about e-resource access and holdings in the Library’s e-resource management systems and tools
7. Coordinate communication regarding appropriate conditions of use for licensed content
8. Collaborate with public service librarians to increase awareness of licensed resources and coordinate training and provide information as needed across the library system
9. Serve as a key participant in UTL’s e-resource troubleshooting team
10. Participate in e-resource reviews and assessment
11. Participate in the development and maintenance of e-resource collection development strategies and procedures
12. Perform liaison or collection development duties as assigned
13. Serve on library and university committees and working groups as necessary
14. Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

1. A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies
2. Demonstrated knowledge in library technical services especially in acquisitions, license negotiation, e-resource management, e-resource troubleshooting, data licensing or serials
3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of electronic resource management practices
4. Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the values of inclusivity, diversity and accessibility
5. Excellent written and oral communication skills
6. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently
7. Highly developed organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with an aptitude for detail-oriented work
8. Strong initiative and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively
9. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with varied groups within a large and complex organization
10. Flexibility, open-mindedness and the ability to function in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment
11. A high level of tolerance for complexity and ambiguity

Preferred Qualifications

1. Professional experience negotiating electronic resource license agreements in an academic library
2. Experience in library technical services especially in acquisitions, license negotiation, e-resource management, e-resource troubleshooting, or serials
3. Knowledge of publisher’s, vendor’s and aggregator’s pricing policies and business models
4. Familiarity with scholarly communication, copyright, fair dealing and other intellectual property issues as these pertain to e-resources
5. Experience working with Ex Libris Alma, particularly e-resource management functions
6. Demonstrated awareness of emerging technologies, standards, technical and preservation issues as related to the acquisition, licensing, access and usage of electronic resources
7. Instructional experience preferred

Salary and Terms of Appointment: This is a permanent status stream position.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.

It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I or II level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB I: $69,356; LIB II: $72,367 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications).
