The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) seeks a consultant to facilitate the mentor matching process for the Kaleidoscope Program in 2021.

This three-month, part-time consulting appointment (up to 60 hours over 3 months, $225/hour) will be responsible for matching 15–20 Kaleidoscope Program Diversity Scholars with professionals in the ARL community to serve as mentors for two years. The Kaleidoscope Program supports master of library and information science students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups to careers in research libraries and archives.

The consultant will work closely with the senior director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Job Summary/Objectives

The incumbent will work closely with the ARL senior director to

  • develop a process to facilitate the mentor matching process and communications for diversity scholars and mentors;
  • conduct surveys and interviews, as needed, with diversity scholars to learn of their needs in a mentor; 
  • use their professional networks and other methods, as advised by the senior director, to find prospective mentors; 
  • interview prospective mentors to determine a successful match; and
  • will connect the diversity scholar with their mentor.

Desired qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in the libraries/archives field
  • Demonstrated expertise in facilitating mentoring relationships
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the libraries and archives field
  • Participation in professional organizations
  • Deep understanding of the unique challenges associated with mentoring BIPOC individuals
  • Ability to meet deadlines and track project work in a timely manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

The timeline for the project is from the time of hire until October 31, 2021.

Following the duration of appointment, a review will be conducted. Following that review, the appointment may be renewed yearly if both parties agree to a continuance.
