The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame seek an energetic, service oriented, and collaborative professional to serve as a Project Archivist for Architectural Records (two-year appointment). Working within the Specialized Collections Program and under the supervision of Head of Archival Collections and Management, the Architecture Archivist will steward archival collections and promote their access, use, and reuse. The position will be responsible for the appraisal, arrangement and description, and management of architectural records in all formats housed within the Architecture Library.   The position will appraise collections for enduring historical, evidentiary, and legal value following local best practices for collection development and materials disposition. Decisions made during the appraisal process will determine the final make-up of each collection.  The position will arrange and describe collections consisting of all media types (manuscript, audio-visual, photographic, born-digital, etc.) where specialized knowledge of architectural nomenclature and a clear understanding of collection sensitivities is critical.  The position necessitates advanced knowledge of preservation techniques. The position will identify collections requiring conservation treatment and will submit those materials to conservation.  The incumbent will be expected to manage collections throughout the duration of the materials’ lifecycle; including space management and inventory control, ensuring a high-level of security at all times. The position will be responsible for creating and maintaining location registers and other tools that aid in storage and retrieval. Advanced knowledge of metadata schemas such as EAD and MARC21, knowledge of descriptive standards such as, DACs, as well as a basic understanding of encoding languages, e.g., XML, is necessary. Knowledge of collections management systems, namely ArchivesSpace, and Integrated Library Systems, i.e., Aleph and Primo, is necessary. About the Architectural Archives: The archival collections housed within the Architecture Library in the Walsh Family Hall of Architecture support the research and curricular needs of the faculty, students, and scholars visiting the School of Architecture by providing access to historical documentation of significant New Traditional and New Urbanist architects and firms, architects/firms who have won the Richard H. Driehaus Prize at the University of Notre Dame, a retrospective collection of student work, rare and exceptional materials, and documentation related to the study of classical and traditional architecture and urbanism. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Appraise, arrange and describe archival collections of all media types and with varying degrees of complexity. Perform in-depth historical research to ensure descriptive tools are complete and accurate. Arranges collections according to the archival tenets of provenance and respect de fonds. Publishes EAD finding aids in accordance with national standards of description.         
  • Enhances the discoverability of archival collections through the creation of MARC records derived from EAD finding aids. Requires application of descriptive standards and includes application/interpretation of name and subject authority standards.
  • Manages archival collections in accordance with local best practices. Includes creating, enhancing, and manipulating metadata within various collections management tools, e.g., ArchivesSpace, Aleph, Primo, etc.   
  • Participation in team/unit planning and workflow discussions, creation/updating of documentation; participation in special projects related to discovery and collections management and on relevant divisional and library teams as appropriate.  
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned; perform other duties as required. 
Qualifications Required
  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent or equivalent terminal degree required. Degree must be completed prior to the candidate's starting date of employment.
  • Experience working in an Architectural Archive or other repository where architectural records were a collecting focus.
  • Ability to work independently and with groups. 
  • Effective communicator, organized, with high attention to detail. Ability to work with initiative, prioritize and balance multiple projects at the same time.  
  • Knowledge of archival collections management tools. 
  • Knowledge of standardized descriptive practices such as DACs and EAD. 
  • Knowledge of the preservation of CAD and other born-digital architectural file formats
Preferred
  • Knowledge of the International Council On Archives Guide to the Archival Care of Architectural Records 19th-20th centuries
  • Advanced study in 19th- and 20th-century American architecture, historic preservation, urban planning, or design history.
  • Knowledge of one or more European Languages 
Salary and Benefits: Appointment salary and rank are competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The Visiting Architecture Archivist is a non-tenure track member of the Library Faculty.
