The School of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at Purdue University invites applications for a non-tenure track Faculty of Engineering Practice position at the rank of Professor of Practice (PEP), at the mid-to-senior career level. Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with interests and expertise in Advanced Manufacturing. The Advanced Manufacturing platform is defined as the innovative manufacturing science and engineering for physical and/or digital designs, materials, processes, integrated products, and systems. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in Engineering or a related discipline. The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellent potential to significantly increase our activities in Advanced Manufacturing. The candidate is also expected to demonstrate potential to integrate their professional practice with the School of Mechanical Engineering’s research, education, and/or engagement/outreach programs. The successful candidate will bring notable professional practical experience through small- and/or large- industrial engagements and professional societies. Experience in traditional industrial sectors such as transportation and defense industries as well as emerging sectors such as autonomous systems and I 4.0 are attractive for this opportunity. Also, we encourage applicants who have a strong interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. Special emphasis is on recruiting highly qualified PEP candidate towards building a diverse and inclusive culture at ME. This PEP hire will be engaged in applying experience through multiple avenues. Following are few examples of avenues: 1. manage a ME shared facility(ies); 2. bring in industry partners to create applied research opportunities in small and large industrial collaborations and/or industry-government partnerships; 3. develop and teach undergraduate and graduate hands-on and project-based learning classes that use machines such as milling, metal additive printers, etc.; 4. write proposals for updating current and seeking new equipment for modeling and experimental eminence; 5. participate in professional societies activities, and others. Overall, the successful candidate is expected to provide a highly synergistic framework to augment the School’s and College of Engineering’s progress in manufacturing towards research, education, innovation, and entrepreneurship opportunities for societal impact.
Established in 1882, the School of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest of Purdue’s engineering schools and has granted over 28,000 degrees. The School has become synonymous with innovation and outstanding accomplishment in engineering research, education, global engagement, and entrepreneurship. The School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University is well-known for its breadth and strength in multiple areas of advanced manufacturing and is engaged in application areas such as autonomous vehicles, aerospace, defense, agriculture, food, energy, and more. In addition to supporting faculty and facilities expansion, including in the emerging area of Convergent Manufacturing, the School’s fundraising has enabled the newly-opened, LEED-certified, $34.5M Roger B. Gatewood Wing of Mechanical Engineering with substantial space dedicated to design research and education; the $30M LEED-certified expansion of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories; an $8.2M expansion of High-Pressure facilities at the Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories; and numerous endowed scholarships and fellowships. Its annual research expenditures and endowment/trust funds have grown rapidly to $24M per year and over $80M, respectively. The School of Mechanical Engineering is home to Herrick, Zucrow, and Kepner research laboratories with significant infrastructure and a long tradition of collaboration in manufacturing with industries and national laboratories. Purdue is also home to BIRCK Nanotechnology Center with extensive access to user fab-lab and electronics manufacturing. In addition, large-scale hands-on design and prototyping facilities such as the Bechtel Innovation and Design Center, Anvil co-working and student incubator, Foundry, and the new convergence facility helping students and faculty transform ideas into innovation through entrepreneurship.
