POSITION DESCRIPTION Scholarly Communication Coordinator (Associate or Full Librarian) The University of California, Santa Barbara, is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The University Library at UC Santa Barbara is a member of the Association of Research Libraries. Individually and collectively, the University of California (UC) libraries provide access to the world’s knowledge for the UC campuses and the communities they serve, supporting UC’s missions of teaching, research and public service. The University of California has a deep commitment to its leadership role in the transformation of scholarly communications toward greater openness in the dissemination of scholarship. A major initiative is working to collaboratively transform scholarly publishing and communication, as described in the 2018 Pathways to Open Access strategic roadmap. In partnership with the UC Academic Senate, the libraries are utilizing system-wide journal contract renewals to negotiate and implement transformative open access agreements with scholarly journal publishers. UC’s transformative agreements at present cover up to 30 % of UC publications, with a goal of rapid progress through additional agreements. The UC open access (OA) policies reserve rights for UC faculty and other employees to make their articles freely available to the public in an open access repository. eScholarship offers a robust scholarly publishing platform that enables departments, research units, publishing programs, and individual scholars associated with the University of California to have direct control over the creation and dissemination of the full range of their scholarship. With a very dynamic and innovative UC Libraries community of scholarly communication librarians, UC is actively leading the broader conversation in North America around transforming the current publishing model toward open scholarship. The Library is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. DESCRIPTION The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, forward-looking, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as the Scholarly Communication Coordinator who understands the opportunities for libraries as the traditional system of scholarly publishing continues to rapidly evolve. The incumbent provides leadership to the UCSB community in the arena of scholarly communication and guides the UCSB Library’s Scholarly Communications Program. The incumbent advocates for barrier-free access to and use of scholarship and supports UCSB researchers in navigating the challenges and opportunities within the dynamic landscape of scholarly communication. The UCSB Scholarly Communication Program leads Library and campus activities on a wide range of issues related to the rapidly changing system of creating, evaluating, disseminating, and preserving research and scholarly outputs. The Program realizes the high profile of this Library priority by partnering with stakeholders across the UCSB library, UCSB campus, UC system, and relevant organizations to understand and influence changes to the system of scholarly communications. The Scholarly Communication Coordinator provides leadership and instruction regarding author rights, copyright, open access publishing, and compliance with UC open access policies and public access requirements for federally funded research. This position will be responsible for maintaining awareness of national and international publishing trends, intellectual property rights, copyright, and information technologies that affect access to scholarly information. The incumbent is expected to work closely with UCSB Library staff, the University’s Office of General Counsel, faculty and students. RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for Research Resources & Scholarly Communication, the Scholarly Communication Coordinator: Develops and advances the vision for the UCSB Scholarly Communications Program. Directs and manages its operations by setting the program’s goals, policies, best practices, and assessment metrics for program success and sustainability. Manages Scholarly Communication Program’s budget and coordinates the Library’s Scholarly Communication Program website. Collaborates with the Scholarly Communication and Open Access Standing Committee (SCOASC) on activities and services related to open access and scholarly communication, including outreach, programming, and communication strategy related to monitoring and building awareness of the changes occurring in academic publishing to foster free and open access to research. Leads the implementation and assessment of UCSB and UC system-wide strategic initiatives associated with the Scholarly Communication Program. Leads initiatives related to scholarly communication and publishing, including organizing relevant events, such as Open Access and Fair Use Week. Coordinates with the California Digital Library and the Office of Scholarly Communication to ensure that UCSB scholarship is well-curated, discoverable, and preserved in the UC eScholarship repository. Actively collaborates with staff across the UCSB library (Collection Strategies, Research and Engagement, Teaching and Learning, Research Data Services, ReADS, etc.) on scholarly communication activities that align with Library and campus strategic goals. Collaborates with librarians involved with collection and scholarly communication activities in the social sciences, humanities, and sciences to develop educational materials to increase awareness among UCSB faculty, researchers, and students about open educational resources and scholarly communication issues. Develops an education program for faculty, researchers, and students regarding scholarly communications issues in a digital academic environment, including open access, data management, copyright, fair use, and author rights. Provides consultation services to faculty, researchers, graduate students, and post - doctoral students/fellows on publishing choices, publishing agreements, open access publishing, retention of rights, and overall management of intellectual property. Provides advice on using resources, including open resources, in teaching classes on campus and online. Liaises with University Legal Counsel, the Office of Research, and relevant intercampus groups and faculty committees to find solutions and drive actions and policies that support cutting-edge scholarly communication practices. Serves as the Library’s primary consultant regarding campus intellectual property and copyright issues, fair use and permissions. Serves as a source of Library expertise on copyright and intellectual property matters that bear on the scholarly communications system and barrier-free dissemination of knowledge. Creates educational and outreach materials about intellectual property issues and provides consultative services regarding scholarly works permissions. Monitors and engages in national initiatives, trends and policy issues that shape scholarly communication. Informs the UCSB community of the significance of national scholarly communications trends and contributes to campus efforts to ensure that scholars, students, and libraries in the digital environment retain the full benefits of the current and evolving intellectual property system. QUALIFICATIONS Basic qualifications (required at time of application) At time of application, an ALA-accredited Master’s degree, or Master’s degree in an academic field with at least two years’ relevant experience in intellectual property and copyright areas; and, At least 3 years of professional experience in an academic environment, scientific or scholarly publishing, or related setting. Additional qualifications (required at time of start) Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by submitted materials including the CV, Cover Letter, and optional but encouraged statement of diversity. Preferred qualifications JD degree or PhD, in academic field with relevant experience in intellectual property and copyright areas; Experience with intellectual property and copyright law and their application in academic environments, scientific or scholarly publishing, or in related settings, as they relate to creation, dissemination, and use of digital information resources, especially across an array of disciplines and contexts; Experience providing guidance on scholarly communication, copyright, and fair use topics; Experience building and sustaining collaborative working relationships with diverse groups; Experience in managing multiple projects and priorities independently using effective problem-solving and analytic techniques; Demonstrated knowledge of technical, legal, and information policy issues related to scholarly publishing and new modes of scholarly communication; Experience in building understanding of scholarly communication and intellectual property issues through educational sessions, informational materials, and/or events; Experience writing grant proposals and managing grant-funded projects related to scholarly communication; Experience using current and emerging technologies to communicate with faculty, staff, and students; Experience building and sustaining a dynamic program with a clear, realistic vision and expectations; and, Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
