Special Collections Librarian
NC State University Libraries Job Location: North Carolina Date Created: 09-14-2021
The NC State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Special Collections Librarian. This two-year position resides in the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), with 6 librarians and 3 support staff, which collects, describes, preserves, and provides access to unique, rare, and historical information in support of teaching, learning, and research. The department applies innovative digital technologies to transform archival services and collections for electronic access and use, engage users with rare and unique materials, and provide user-focused services including both undergraduate and graduate instruction and guided project work and internships.
The Special Collections Librarian is a key contributor to the department’s technical and public services functions in providing students, faculty, and other researchers with access to archival collections and rare books. The position serves as a processing assistant and oversees the work of a team of graduate students in archival and manuscript processing (both physical and born-digital collections), digitization, and university history. Much of this work is conducted at the Libraries’ Satellite Shelving Facility, located a short distance from the D. H. Hill Jr. Library on the university’s main campus, where the position frequently serves as the onsite manager and supervisor, addressing a range of operational and service issues. Public service responsibilities include providing reference assistance and coordinating the access and delivery of Special Collections materials to students, faculty, and other researchers. This position may participate in the SCRC’s outreach and engagement activities including classroom instruction and other events. Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.
Review of applications is underway; position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
