In this newly created role, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Officer will lead and manage the development, implementation, and integration of best practices, resources, and trends to increase inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) proficiency throughout the organization. The DEI Officer, as part of the Libraries’ leadership team, will work in partnership with the campus and library community to address IDEA needs and provide leadership in the development of new programs and initiatives that advance the Libraries’ efforts toward achieving inclusive excellence.

The DEI Officer will work to create an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and library employees, and other members within UMD’s campus community through program development and management, training sessions, and activity planning. The DEI Officer works in collaboration with Library Human Resources (LHR) to ensure that employees and students have a comfortable place to work and learn, regardless of their race, gender, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or disability, and communicates frequently with departmental and executive stakeholders to understand the unique needs of the Libraries’ workforce. This position reports directly to the Director of Library Human Resources, with access to the Dean of Libraries through a “dotted line” report. The incumbent serves as the Libraries’ diversity officer and equity administrator, and serves as a leader (or co-leader) of the IDEA Committee with the Libraries. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

EDUCATION:

Master’s degree in subject(s) relevant to position. 

EXPERIENCE:

Evidence of a minimum of three or more years of recent experience as a mid-level or senior-level leader in program administration relative to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), change management, organizational development, and/or human resources.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Demonstrated ability to use good judgment, tact, and discretion with sensitive/confidential matters in a higher education or research setting. 
  • Demonstrated ability to design surveys and analyze data, and to produce reports and presentations, and develop tools to measure progress. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be visionary and tactical in executing strategies; to understand evolving issues and DEI trends affecting higher education; and to evaluate, influence, create, and implement DEI programs. 
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in a decentralized academic environment with multiple constituency groups and leadership levels. 
  • Demonstrated experience in program and project planning and implementation.
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to function independently and in groups, build and maintain relationships with campus partners and library staff. 

Preferences: 

  • Preference given to individuals with Libraries experience in combination with a graduate degree in a discipline related to the position, along with relevant professional certifications and IDEA-related affiliations. 
  • Experience in Human Resources-oriented program administration and evaluation. 
  • Evidence of teaching/instruction experience.

SALARY RANGE: $58,100 to $72,500
