POSITION AVAILABLE: Curator, Florida Environment & Natural History Collections, Tampa campus  POSITION SUMMARY: The University of South Florida (USF) Libraries, Tampa campus seeks a creative, dynamic, and motivated professional to curate the Florida Environment and Natural History (FLENH) collection.  The FLENH initiative positions USF as a leader among U.S. academic institutions by establishing a central repository for environmental and natural history data and providing sustainable institutional support for the ingest, creation, and distribution of archival resources centered on the impacts to and effects on Florida’s natural environment. The Curator will actively and effectively lead the acquisition, organization, display, digitization, preservation, promotion, and use of the FLENH collection. Although the FLENH business and implementation plans provides a general framework for the anticipated trajectory of collection emphasis, opportunities will exist for a creative and forward-leading individual to shape direction. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to fully implement a plan as well as a readiness to coordinate, enhance, and sustain collection engagement through collaboration, team leadership and management, scholarly and creative activities, and the application of innovative technologies. The Curator reports to the Director, Special Collections and is a member of the USF Libraries Faculty. This is a 12-month, non-tenure-track library faculty position. Candidates with an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library and/or information science may be considered for either a Librarian or Curator appointment. Candidates with accredited terminal degrees in fields other than library/information science will be considered for a Curator appointment. Librarian and Curator ranks are commensurate with demonstrated experience and expertise. Responsibilities of a Curator/Librarian include, but are not limited to:
  • Establishing strategic priorities for growing, enhancing, and sustaining specified collection area(s) in alignment with USF Libraries’ strategic directions.
  • Evaluating and contextualizing both existing and new materials to support research and curricular use of archival, print, and digital collections.
  • Continuously assessing workflows and reporting on activities relative to the specified collection, including budget and impact measures.
  • Working collaboratively, across units and departments, to enhance access to the specified collection area through teaching, research, digitization, promotion, and marketing.
  • Providing reference, research, and library instruction services.
  • Directing the maintenance and expenditure of endowment accounts and/or collection budgets.
  • Managing staff and students, and developing internships and other student research opportunities.
  • Maintaining an active program of professional development, scholarship, and service in areas of relevant expertise.

  • An interest in overseeing and coordinating projects and personnel in a collegial and team-based work environment.
Minimum Qualifications: EITHER a Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and/or information science OR the highest degree in an appropriate field of specialization earned by the time of appointment. Demonstrated communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications: One year of librarian, curatorial, academic, or research experience with responsibility for at least one of the following: acquiring, maintaining, or facilitating access to research collections and materials.
  • Demonstrated or applicable experience in: Environmental Studies, Natural History, or relevant scientific fields
  • Experience creating, analyzing, or using scientific data sets.
  • Familiarity or experience with public service, instruction, cataloguing, archives management, collections management, or digital collections in an academic library.
  • Understanding of standards and best practices for working with primary source materials in a specialized setting.
  • Experience designing physical or online displays and exhibits.
  • Evidence of professional growth through research, publication, association activities, or other contributions to the field.
