The University Library of Governors State University is inviting applicants for the newly created position of Department Chair of the University Library at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The position is a 12-month appointment and reports to the Dean of the University Library. The chair, working with the dean, is responsible for faculty and staff evaluations, collaborative work with the other academic units and assists the dean in overseeing a $2 million budget. The chair will oversee the librarians, including the head of Technical and Public services. The chair will also work with the dean in planning for the future, revitalizing and modernizing the informational holdings (both physical and digital) and work on planning as needed for the proposed new library building.
Additionally, the Division Chair will work with the Dean on the hiring and evaluation processes for tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty; resolving conflicts informally and formally; resolving student concerns; and representing the Library and Dean’s Office internally and externally. The Division Chair has the primary responsibility for providing curricular and instructional leadership and for coordinating the academic resources of the library and expanding the scholarship and funding opportunities.
The chair may also serve as the library liaison to the College of Business.A new library building is currently the number one priority in the recently approved facilities Master Plan for the University. In the meantime the successful candidate will assist in our plans to develop a separate library spaces for the College of Business, College of Education, and College of Health and Human Services within the current physical layout of the library. Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters of Library and Information Science from an ALA Accredited Program.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or in progress ABD; or an MA or MBA in a business related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent inter-personal and collaborative skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to candidates with Spanish or Arabic speaking, reading-writing skills.
  • Experience with budgets.
  • Previous Chair or Departmental leadership.
  • Record of scholarship (writing and grants).
  • Working knowledge of OER.
