SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The Digital Repository Librarian is responsible for developing, supporting, and assessing recruitment activities as well as managing the content in cIRcle, UBC’s open access digital repository. The role is also responsible for managing the repository software and technical system administration of the cIRcle database; managing the development and implementation of content policies and procedures; ensuring copyright compliance of repository content; and undertaking promotion of cIRcle and open access. The Digital Repository Librarian is responsible for many of the day-to-day activities of cIRcle, including liaising with reference librarians and with faculty regarding content recruitment, assuring the application of interoperability standards for metadata; assisting with ongoing development of an assessment program for the digital repository, overseeing internal records management activities in the cIRcle office, and developing and maintaining the cIRcle web site. Hires and supervises student employees. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Masters-level degree from an accredited program of library, or information science, or equivalent internationally accredited program.

  • Knowledge of digital repository or digital asset management software platforms (DSpace an asset) as well as an aptitude for, or strong interest in, engaging with other tools in the digital library environment
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications and open scholarship practices, principles, and mandates
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment, and to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships
  • Knowledge of metadata principles, schemas, and standards in a digital library environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills modeled through active listening and appreciative inquiry, and a willingness to provide and receive specific and meaningful feedback
  • Public service experience and demonstrated commitment to customer service
  • Ability to make effective presentations to faculty, students, library colleagues, etc.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, both independently and as a team member
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to assume a variety of assignments that invite open experimentation, creativity and innovation
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds, and take initiative in learning about language and issues relating to equity and diversity.

 Preferred: 

  • Working experience with digital repositories
  • Working experience in a research or other large academic library, and public service experience
  • Understanding of copyright and rights management
  • Understanding of digital preservation issues and considerations

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: 

  • Reports to the Head, Digital Programs and Services. cIRcle is part of Digital Programs and Services (DPS), and strategic direction is provided by the AUL, Digital Programs and Services. Requires a high degree of planning, collaboration and coordination within the cIRcle Office and other Library units, in particular, Information Technology and Technical Services, as well as, reference librarians and members of the UBC community and its partners. Works closely with external software contractors, and supervises the work of library staff and student assistants. 

DUTIES:

  • Leads the maintenance, enhancement, customization and troubleshooting of cIRcle’s DSpace instance and its integration with Open Collections (its associated access platform) in close collaboration with IT, DPS and Atmire (DSpace developer)
  • Acts as primary liaison for Technical Services regarding mediated deposit service workflows and metadata guidelines, and works to ensure that appropriate content management support for the cIRcle database is in place
  • Collaborates with IT, DPS, and Artefactual (Archivematica developer) to develop and maintain the cIRcle digital repository preservation program
  • Undertakes and assists with projects and initiatives to enhance and expand the repository and its related services, including maintaining and developing metadata and preservation standards and quality controls for new and existing digital records
  • Develops and maintains project and workflow schedules, procedures, and supporting documentation
  • Oversees copyright and license management workflows and consults on rights management issues related to the repository
  • Collaborates with reference librarians and faculty to recruit content that falls within the cIRcle acquisition policy
  • Manages content recruitment projects and content management workflows
  • Coordinates educational and promotional efforts with other library units and delivers presentations to build awareness of repository services
  • Develops and refines assessment criteria and reporting for the digital repository
  • Oversees and contributes to maintenance and enhancement of content for the cIRcle web site
  • Participates in internal and external committees and working groups
  • Manages student assistant budgets, hiring and project supervision.

The nature and scope of the responsibilities for this position are expected to change as the Library organization and digital repository services evolve.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND SALARY: 

This position will be filled as a full-time, 18-month term position. Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications. We are seeking applications from Librarians with up to 5 years of experience.
