Position Title: Research Services Librarian

Department: Research, Instruction & Outreach

Position Description: This tenure-track position reports to the Head of Research, Instruction & Outreach (RIO) and will act as the department’s primary research and reference librarian. This position will be responsible for managing all reference duties such as chat services, scheduling of reference services which include chat and desk hours, and other duties as assigned. Research Services Librarian will keep abreast of new models of librarianship and develop formal and informal methods of engagement that highlight the library’s role in furthering faculty and student scholarly endeavors.

Responsibilities:

  • Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Represents and advocates for quality research/reference services and programs
  • Pursues innovative approaches in providing reference services
  • Promotes the development of innovative reference and instructional materials
  • Conducts assessment of reference services and uses results to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of services
  • Covers extended hours for research assistance evenings and weekends
  • Maintains as well as enhances web-based research guides pertinent to assigned areas
  • Engages and interacts with all Library user communities through formal and informal channels to determine user needs
  • Explores, evaluates, and encourages integration of emerging technology into library services Assists in the development of research services, policies, and procedures
  • Selecting and evaluating resources for the library’s collection
  • Teaches students information literacy concepts and research skills

In addition, the position requires service on various teams and committees as assigned as well as other duties in support of RIO and the Libraries. Engage in scholarly pursuit and other professional and service activities in accordance with Texas Tech University Libraries’ Standards for promotion and tenure. Candidates who have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

Required:

Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program or international equivalent.

Preferred:

Experience working with and providing library-based assessment. Experience or course work in the use of both electronic and traditional print reference tools. Evidence of a strong customer service orientation coupled with an ability to interact positively and productively in a collegial academic environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment. Experience working in an academic library. Experience providing reference and instruction. Experience delivering outreach.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The position is a 12-month appointment with a nationally competitive salary. Librarians and archivists have academic status and are an integral part of the academic teaching and research mission of the University.
