The University Libraries at Texas State University seeks a creative and versatile individual with experience in digital music production to oversee the operations, support, research, design and testing of audio technologies in the YouStar Studios. Reporting to the YouStar Studios Supervisor, the Audio Specialist is part of a team that is responsible for overseeing technology-driven spaces in Alkek One, a suite of technology spaces in the Alkek Library that includes the YouStar Studios (for recording audio and video), the Immersion Studio (for VR and AR work), the MakerSpace (for digital fabrication), GeoSpace (for GIS work), and DesignSpace (for creating digital assets). Primary responsibilities for this position include troubleshooting audio equipment in the YouStar Studios (currently includes two video studios, two audio studios, and a production studio), researching new technologies for purchase, offering consultation services, engaging with the campus community through workshops and other programming efforts, and serving as the main point of contact for Alkek One on some evenings and weekends.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In alternation with the MakerSpace Night Manager, the Audio Specialist will serve as the main point of contact for Alkek One evenings and weekends, with specific oversight in the YouStar Studios and the MakerSpace (as needed). This position provides in-depth troubleshooting support for audio equipment (including hardware, software, and traditional instruments), as well as high-level support for computers in DesignSpace and GeoSpace, VR equipment in the Immersion Studio, and digital fabrication equipment in the MakerSpace. The Audio Specialist will monitor security on the floor and report any issues to the YouStar Studios Supervisor and UPD as applicable. This position will assist with supervision of several student workers in coordination with the YouStar Studios Supervisor to ensure all Alkek One spaces are running smoothly in the evenings and weekends. Additionally, this position provides consultation services to students, faculty and staff, gives workshops, and serves as backup to the YouStar Supervisor as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Knowledge of:

  • Music production, composition and/or arrangement
  • Hardware Interfaces
  • Virtual Instruments
  • Traditional instruments (including maintenance)
  • Studio setup, breakdown and maintenance

Skills:

  • Advanced music production using Digital Audio Workstations, MIDI devices and traditional instruments
  • Oral and Written Communication
  • Audio hardware and software troubleshooting

Ability to:

  • Consult on audio best practices (live and studio)
  • teach music production, arrangement, and/or composition
  • establish rapport with a variety of clients
  • perform outreach and create relationships with technology leaders

 Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Audio Engineering, or a related field
  • Knowledge of university/academic policies and procedures
  • Experience teaching production, arrangement and/or composition at the college level
  • Prior experience establishing relationships with campus partners and/or technology leaders

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Commensurate with experience. Benefits include monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits package and retirement program. No state or local income tax.
