The Metadata Librarian leads and directs the goals and assignments of staff responsible for metadata creation and cataloging (MARC and non-MARC) at all levels, in all formats, for all collections, and promotes a collaborative and cohesive work environment. The successful candidate will foster and facilitate collaboration within and external to the Metadata unit to ensure that the most efficient and appropriate metadata standards and best practices are used in making physical, electronic, and digital materials discoverable and accessible. The person in this position provides collaborative leadership in metadata and discovery work occurring across the Libraries’ physical and digital repositories. This position regularly consults with acquisitions, e-resource, and discovery system managers and committees to optimize productivity and collaboration contributing to continuous metadata process improvements in the acquisition and discovery of library resources. This position regularly assesses procedures and develops strategies to increase productivity and streamline workflows. This position will have the opportunity to share their Metadata expertise with several departments within the Libraries: Archives, Digitization as well as the Purdue University Research Repository (PURR).  This position will also play an integral role in providing Metadata recommendations related to the BTAA BIG Collection initiative. Required:
  • ALA-accredited Masters in Library and Information Science
  • Three (3) years of significant experience in acquisitions, cataloging, or metadata services
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience)
  • Experience with bibliographic utilities, integrated library systems, vendor cataloging services, authority control services, and automated routines for bibliographic maintenance
  • Supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty/staff, students, and colleagues
  • Ability to adapt to new standards and technologies and a willingness to explore and implement new technologies, standards, and practices to enhance services and complete tasks more efficiently
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in-person and virtually using a variety of media and technologies
  • Current on latest cataloging and metadata standards (e.g. RDA, LCSH, FRBR, Dublin Core)

Preferred:

  • Experience working with digital libraries or institutional repositories
  • Experience working with ExLibris products
  • Experience systematically assessing metadata across library systems, and developing methods to enhance and improve quality for discovery and interoperability
  • Ability to perform original and complex copy cataloging for all formats, including print, non-print, and digital resources - ensuring compliance with national and local standards, such as MARC, RDA, AACR2, NACO, LCSH, OCLC, LC Classification and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards
  • Experience with MODS, EAD, METS, BIBFRAME, linked data, discovery, etc
  • Reading or bibliographic knowledge of one or more foreign languages
