Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning Services (at time of initial posting the AUL for Content and Discovery), the Student Success and Engagement Librarian will be responsible for collaborating with faculty and peers to provide integrated information literacy sessions within the curriculum. The Student Success and Engagement Librarian will work with a collaborative team of Teaching Librarians that supports the instructional and reference goals of the library. This opportunity is available to both experienced and qualified new graduates who have completed their degree by the end of the posting period.

The UCR Library is comprised of two facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 22,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 116, including 26 FTE librarians, 58 FTE support personnel, and 32 students, in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomás Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC’s more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC’s California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.
- Develop and Lead library engagement, outreach, and liaise with faculty, students, and staff involved in the University Writing Program and gateway STEM courses (including BIO 5LA and CHEM 1LA),
- Collaborate with the University Programs Teaching Librarian to cultivate relationships with University partners supporting student success and academic preparedness such as the Academic Resources Center and the Writing Center,
- Provide in-depth research consultations with faculty and instructors regarding information literacy course integration and appropriate supporting research materials,
- Contribute to the development of reusable teaching tools (both digital and analog),
- Provide general reference service support for students working on the information desk both virtually and in-person,
- Contribute to DigiRef the UC-wide consortium virtual reference service,
- Participate in departmental instructional rotations, reference support, projects, and service development,
- Participate in assessment and other quality improvement activities,
- Solicit and discuss information on research and instructional resource needs from faculty and patrons.
- Participate in ongoing communication through discussions and recommendations for purchases to Collection Strategies and Special Collections and University Archives as appropriate.
- Collaborate with library colleagues across the library on student engagement activities,
- Independently and collaboratively participate in ongoing professional development.
UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit; The University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.
Appointment at rank of Assistant Librarian to Librarian - Potential Career depending upon qualifications and experience. Advancement through the librarian ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every two to three years, each of which includes substantial peer review. Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- ALA-accredited (MLIS, MLS etc.) degree or equivalent advanced degree.
- One year demonstrated teaching experience and knowledge of pedagogical best practices.
- Ability to present information effectively in a variety of settings and modalities.
- Ability to provide excellent reference and instruction services in all formats for students and faculty in an academic library.
- Experience creating web-based research guides or tutorials.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness.
- Commitment to pedagogical professional development.
- Three years’ experience providing instruction or reference services in an academic setting.
- Experience providing instruction services in an academic library or higher education setting.
- Experience providing in-person and/or online reference service in an academic library.
- Knowledge of or experience with instructional design concepts and/or educational technology.
