ROLE of the POSITION

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries seeks a collaborative and creative librarian who is ready to share expertise in information literacy by designing co-curricular learning experiences as an Educational Outreach Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Educational Initiatives, the Educational Outreach Librarian will join an innovative and collaborative team that supports undergraduate learning, online education, co-curricular outreach to students, and faculty development. The Educational Outreach Librarian will collaborate with faculty and staff in the library and across the university to design holistic co-curricular learning experiences and outreach programs for students. The incumbent will lead the development, provision, and assessment of the Libraries’ outreach initiatives, such as new student orientations, programs for first-generation and transfer students, and activities designed to foster student success and lifelong learning. The Educational Outreach Librarian leads the Stuart & Flora Mason Undergraduate Peer Research Coach Program, which provides meaningful employment opportunities to 6-7 students that support co-curricular learning experiences and information literacy instruction for first-year students. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with flexibility and creativity. The incumbent will be able to share examples of working effectively with a group towards accomplishing goals such as in department, division, campus, and committee meetings with students, staff, faculty, and administration. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable of inclusive pedagogies and instruction practices in order to engage students who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional academic libraries. 

Responsibilities

  • Serve as library liaison to university colleagues in co-curricular offices that support the student experience such as admissions, residential life, service learning programs, student affairs, and student diversity and social justice.
  • Coordinate and participate directly in the development, provision, and assessment of outreach initiatives in order for students to feel connected to and empowered by library spaces, resources, faculty, and staff.
  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day operations, including hiring, training, and assigning work activities for the Mason Undergraduate Peer Research Coach Program.
  • Work collaboratively to develop co-curricular programs in partnership with academic support units such as the Academic Success Center, First-Year Experience, International Programs, the Intersection, the Office of International Students and Scholars, and the Writing Center.
  • Participate directly in the development, provision, and assessment of curriculum-integrated instruction sessions, including but not limited to those for first-year composition and other targeted courses in the campus undergraduate curriculum.
  • Provide research assistance through individual and small group consultations both in person and online.
  • Keep current with trends and developments in outreach, co-curricular learning, and student engagement that support and enhance student success.
  • Participate in outreach efforts to promote the UNLV Libraries to campus stakeholders for the Research and Education Division.
  • Participate in the activities of the Research and Education Division and contribute significantly to the planning, development and assessment of the Division’s policies and services.
  • Participate in faculty governance activities, including attending faculty meetings, voting on bylaws changes, voting in other faculty elections, and serving on committees when elected or appointed.
  • As a faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to engage in scholarly activities and to provide service to the university, community, and profession in accordance with UNLV and UNLV Libraries standards for promotion and tenure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position requires an earned Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment. 
  • Competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
  • Recent experience or course work in information literacy instruction.
  • Familiarity with student engagement and co-curricular learning theory, practice, and assessment.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth.
  • Ability to work independently and collegially.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience developing engaging orientations, student support activities, or other co-curricular outreach to students.
  • Experience supervising student employees or volunteer teams.
  • Experience teaching in a higher education setting, including designing lesson plans and assessment tools.

SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant (Rank II, tenure-track). Minimum salary is $65,000. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
