JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Penn State University Libraries is currently seeking an individual to fulfill the position of Part-Time Copyright Specialist. The Copyright Specialist assists faculty, staff, and students with copyright and scholarly communications matters and serves as a library resource on these topics. This is a one-year position with a flexible schedule of 15 to 20 hours per week, in the Office of Scholarly Communications and Copyright. The work can be done remotely from anywhere in the United States, as this position is fully remote. Responsibilities of the position: 
  • Consult with and advise faculty, staff, and students on copyright and scholarly communications, including questions related to teaching and instructional materials, research, and publishing agreements.
  • In collaboration with the other members of the office, support the copyright needs of library departments, including questions related to public domain status, fair use, and user’s rights such as Section 108.
  • Provide appropriate copyright and scholarly communications reference services through email, Zoom consultations, and copyright FAQs.
  • Create and maintain library informational materials regarding the appropriate use of copyrighted resources consistent with the university’s policies and practices.
  • Teach workshops via Zoom on scholarly communications and copyright topics.
Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Education: Candidates with any of the following degrees will be considered: 1) MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program 2) a Juris Doctor, or 3) other degree that has prepared the candidate to be a skilled provider of copyright and/or scholarly communications information.
  • Experience working on copyright and/or scholarly communications.
  • Experience explaining and/or teaching about copyright or scholarly communications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Experience with copyright law in a library environment.
  • Experience with scholarly communications and open access.
