THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE LIBRARIES FACULTY VACANCY   Student Success Librarian for User Experience   Appointment Rank:  Assistant Professor Department:             Teaching and Learning Programs Location:                    Knoxville, TN Reports To:               Head, Teaching and Learning Programs Salary:                         Minimum $53,500 Available:                  August 1, 2022               The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), a Research 1 institution and the flagship institution for the state, is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join the collaborative and innovative Teaching and Learning Programs team at the University Libraries. The city of Knoxville is a hidden gem with a beautiful and walkable downtown, varied nightlife, active neighborhoods, and eclectic shopping and restaurants. UT is located within easy driving distance to Asheville, Nashville, Atlanta, and the Great Smoky Mountains.   The Student Success Librarian for User Experience will develop, implement, and communicate inclusive approaches to understand user perspectives and needs across disciplines and degree programs. Working in both self-directed and collaborative roles, the successful candidate will employ their user experience expertise toward the planning, creation, and assessment of resources, initiatives, and learning environments that strengthen and support a student-centered library. Through engagement and thoughtful dialogue with UT Libraries’ and University colleagues, the Student Success Librarian will create sustainable and scalable processes to gather student input and to build awareness of student needs. As part of this role, the librarian will facilitate the work of the Dean of Libraries’ Student Advisory Committee, a cross-disciplinary group of undergraduate and graduate students. With respect for student agency and privacy, the librarian will communicate and help apply input gathered to enhance academic and co-curricular success for students in in-person, online, and hybrid modalities.    As a member of the Teaching and Learning Programs Department, the librarian will teach information literacy and research instruction sessions, with a particular focus on early-career undergraduates and the University’s Vol Core general education curriculum; participate in engagement and orientation initiatives; and provide research assistance and consultation. The Student Success Librarian for User Experience will work to meet students, faculty, and staff where they are, with a focus on contributing to a holistic and inclusive vision of student success. The successful candidate will be an active and reflective participant in departmental and cross-departmental conversations and initiatives to enhance an infrastructure of support for colleagues and peers engaged in teaching and learning.    Specific Duties:  
  • Develop and implement resources, programs, and initiatives to understand student perspectives and needs across disciplines and learning modalities 
  • Engage in thoughtful dialogue with Libraries’ and University colleagues to co-create and communicate sustainable and scalable processes to gather student input 
  • Leads the Dean of Libraries’ Student Advisory Committee (DSAC), including coordinating membership and outreach, facilitating meetings and learning activities, and designing assessment 
  • Conduct assessment of resources, processes, and programs developed to evaluate their effectiveness in meeting learning outcomes and aligning with strategic priorities; regularly communicate the results and learnings of the assessment conducted 
  • Collaborate to develop resources, services and spaces to promote student success
  • Contribute to a team-based approach to develop instructional materials, share best practices and pedagogical resources, and conduct assessment of instructional initiatives
  • Participate in liaison responsibilities to include: teaching research and information literacy classes; participating in engagement activities; and providing research assistance and consultation
  • Engage in research/scholarship/creative activity through publication, presentation, and related outlets
  • Serve the library profession through involvement in professional organizations and through cooperative efforts with other information professionals
  Qualifications: The successful candidate must exhibit the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to achieve common goals and demonstrate enthusiasm to meet dynamically changing needs within a culture of continuous learning.   Required  
  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or related discipline by time of appointment
  • Strong commitment to public service
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion in a higher education environment 
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively in both self-directed and collaborative ways to plan, implement, and coordinate projects and initiatives 
  • Demonstrated success in planning and implementing a project or process to understand student perspectives and needs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of assessment techniques and considerations for understanding user experience
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build relationships across professional and disciplinary areas
  • Evidence of ability to engage in research, publication, and service consonant with the University’s and Libraries’ guidelines for faculty promotion and tenure
  Preferred  
  • Experience planning and delivering engagement and outreach activities to student populations
  • Experience teaching information literacy sessions or developing instructional materials
  • Experience in conducting assessment or evaluation of a program or initiative
