SUNY New Paltz Vacancy   External Posting (Professional)   Applications are invited for consideration for appointment to the following position: Department: Library Budget Title: Dean Local Title: Dean, Sojourner Truth Library Posting Date: July 1, 2022 Classification: MP-3   Duties:  We seek a leader to share our vision of effective, collaborative, and innovative service. Key to this vision is leading a Library faculty and staff of approximately 25 and representing the Library to campus constituencies and beyond. Named for Sojourner Truth, who lived in New Paltz, the Library serves an eight-county region and houses some 550,000 volumes, with access to over 85,000 periodicals in over 100 databases.   Responsibilities: Reporting to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the Sojourner Truth Library provides strategic leadership for all functions of the Library, in collaboration with other academic units and in support of the mission of SUNY New Paltz.   We look to our new Dean to:
  • Manage the daily operations and personnel of the Library through team-based problem-solving and professional development
  • Lead the Library’s ongoing strategic planning and assessment, including optimizing Library staffing patterns
  • Represent the Library and its faculty and staff within the Division of Academic Affairs and to the campus and wider community
  • Actively communicate with and respond to the needs of the Library faculty and staff, via formal and informal channels
  • Actively communicate with and respond to the needs of the campus community
  • Manage the financial resources of the Library, including its budget
  • Engage the capacities of the Library to supplement and improve student learning
  • Support student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship
  • Advance the goals of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the Library
  • Assist in external fundraising
  • Support faculty research and scholarship
  • Support or initiate regional partnerships
  We look to the Dean to promote a positive environment for advancing the current goals of Library faculty and staff and responding to the opportunities and challenges of the future. The Dean will work closely with Library faculty and staff to provide services and foster a supportive professional workplace and productive community of scholarly achievement. Reasoned, collaborative, and transparent decision-making will be essential to achieving these goals.   The Dean will also represent the Library in college-wide administrative groups and engage in partnerships to advance the Library’s mission and the strategic directions of SUNY New Paltz. Working collaboratively with faculty, staff and students, the Dean will build connections college-wide, integrating library resources and services with academic departments and support services. Additionally, the dean will engage with the SUNY Libraries Consortium and in partnerships across SUNY libraries.   Qualifications:  The following qualifications will be considered in review of applications:   Required:
  • A master's or higher degree in librarianship/information sciences from an ALA-accredited institution or an international equivalent
  • Administrative and leadership experience in positions of increasing responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability in effectively representing the interests of the Library
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in managing budgets and making collaborative financial decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically, and to implement a strategic plan
  • Evidence of a commitment to building and maintaining a diverse, inclusive Library faculty and staff
  • Effectiveness in personnel matters, including staff development and team-building
  • Broad and critical understanding of the major issues and emerging trends in libraries and librarianship, and in particular, academic libraries
  Preferred:
  • Effectiveness in developing and sustaining collegial collaboration
  • Experience with and/or willingness to participate in fundraising
  • Active service in regional, state and national higher education and/or library organizations
