Librarian for Experiential Learning Job Description Vanderbilt University Libraries seek a motivated and enthusiastic Experiential Learning Librarian who is passionate about supporting the holistic student experience. The Librarian for Experiential Learning contributes to student success by identifying, implementing, and assessing student engagement opportunities that provide active, experiential learning experiences for students across disciplines and environments. Working closely with the Associate University Librarian for Teaching & Learning, the librarian will contribute leadership and vision to high-impact practices and collaborative initiatives on campus, such as Immersion Vanderbilt, the residential colleges, and research fellowships.  The Librarian for Experiential Learning contributes to the development of active and reflective learning experiences that meet students where they are, in online, in-person, and hybrid settings, with a focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, and will work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues and campus partners to contribute to a shared vision of the Libraries’ role in student success. The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are fundamental to the university’s goal of advancing scholarship and learning. We collect, preserve, and make accessible a wide variety of resources. We partner with faculty and students to shape research, and we encourage the development of informed scholars and engaged citizens. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Helps to coordinate and lead cross-campus library outreach and engagement efforts by actively seeking opportunities to collaborate with campus partners such as the Office of Experiential Learning & Immersion Resources, the Writing Studio, the Data Science Institute, the Career Center, the Vanderbilt Undergraduate Summer Research Program, and more.
  • Provides leadership for and investigates new opportunities for Libraries-sponsored student fellowships.
  • Identifies creative opportunities for in-person, online, and hybrid engagement with Vanderbilt students and faculty engaged in experiential learning and collaborative research.
  • Participates in a team-based approach with subject librarians and colleagues in the Teaching & Learning unit to develop instructional and outreach materials, particularly in regard to undergraduate research.
  • Participates in campus initiatives surrounding experiential and engaged learning, mentoring students as appropriate.
  • Collaboratively develops innovative, engaging, and evidence-based library programs and workshops for the campus and local community.
  • Contributes overall to assessment of library teaching, services, programs, and other initiatives.
  • Participates in system-wide library reference initiatives, such as Ask a Librarian.
  • Stays current with the higher education literature, investigating and implementing strategies related to high impact practices, undergraduate research, student success initiatives, etc., and leads peer professional development opportunities in these areas.
  • Hires and supervises student workers as needed.
  • Participates in system-wide library and university initiatives and committees.
  • Participates in scholarly and professional activities including publication of journal articles and book reviews, and/or presentations at regional and national professional conferences that contribute to the practice of academic librarianship.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Evidence of commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in a higher education setting is required.
  • Knowledge of active and experiential learning methods in a higher education setting is required.
  • Evidence of ability to work both independently and collaboratively on teams within the library and with campus partners is required.
  • Familiarity with best practices in the scholarship of undergraduate research is required.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a changing environment is required.
  • Experience leading or mentoring undergraduate students on research preferred.
  • Experience working with co-curricular student engagement opportunities on a college campus is preferred.
  • Experience with student engagement, active learning, or experiential learning methods is preferred.
  • Experience working with or directing student workers is preferred.
