The Associate Director, reporting to the Director of Special Collections Technical Services (SCTS), will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the unit. ACCU is responsible for acquisitions, accessioning, and collections control for collections and items acquired by the Beinecke across all formats. The work of the unit is highly interdependent, and ACCU staff collaborate with colleagues across Yale Library and work closely with external vendors.   The Associate Director leads the development, implementation, assessment, and maintenance of special collections infrastructure, policies, and practices related to acquisitions, accessioning, and collections control; ensures the Beinecke adheres to all guidelines in the procurement process and use of funds, according to accounting and auditing requirements as specified by the university; provides oversight of collections control within the department and movement to and from the department. The Associate Director jointly develops strategies, policies, and procedures for the whole of Beinecke's technical services operations; represents the unit and/or department on a variety of projects and programs inside and outside the department; establishes and maintains relationships with vendors; and identifies and engages in opportunities for collaboration across Special Collection Technical Services units, library departments, and institutions.   The Associate Director's Unit currently includes approximately 16 people but will continue to grow in support of building stewardship capacity. The Associate Director participates in recruitment, managing, training, developing, and directly supervising Unit staff; plans, manages, and assesses process and workflow change; fosters a team approach to the work; and establishes metrics, tracks progress, and regularly reports on the Unit's work.   he Associate Director manages projects and participates in Library committees and task forces, especially as these relate to the needs of special collections at Yale; and participates in regional, national, and international professional activities-both to contribute to the profession and to grow individually as a professional librarian.   As part of the Special Collections Technical Services leadership team, the Associate Director participates in the development and implementation of department- and library-wide goals and initiatives; contributes to the establishment and implementation of frameworks for responsible stewardship; develops leadership and management skills in support of growing organizational development and health; and contributes to the development of an organizational culture that promotes inclusion, collaboration, transparency, continuous learning, and productivity.   This position will be assigned a rank of Librarian 3 or Librarian 4.   1. Under the general direction of the Director for Special Collections Technical Services, manages all aspects of acquisitions, accessioning, and collections control of library materials in all formats. 2. Provides leadership, vision, and administrative management for the unit. 3. Sets annual department goals, strategies, metrics, productivity targets, policies, procedures, and priorities for the unit. 4. Develops and leads multiple projects while meeting deadlines. 5. Manages staff including hiring, evaluation, training, setting priorities, and staff development. 6. Develops strong and supportive teams in collaboration with other departmental managers. 7. Plans for budget in collaboration with Special Collection Technical Services Leadership Team. Manages budget. 8. Collaborates with Collections, Research, and Education; Preservation and Conservation Services; Library Business Office; and other Library departments to ensure department products and services meet collection and staff needs. 9. Promotes the use of current and emerging technologies. 10. Works independently with varied user groups in a complex organization, and functions collaboratively in a team environment. 11. Serves on Library and University committees. 12. Participates in professional activities outside of Yale and monitors developments and best practices elsewhere to encourage innovation and ensure the excellence of the Library. 13. Serves as the Director’s designee as necessary.
  Required Education and Experience:   Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a librarian or archivist. Demonstrated experience with special collections acquisitions, accessioning, and/or collections control theory and practice may be substituted for formal training. Demonstrated experience with library and archival systems used to manage and describe special collections materials. Demonstrated experience with standards and best practices related to special collections acquisitions, accessioning, and/or collections control of special collection material. Demonstrated experience with planning for and managing complex projects and workflow assessment. Experience utilizing and tailoring communication-- oral, written, and interpersonal skills--to work effectively and collaboratively with various stakeholders.   Required Skill/Ability 1:   Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a research library.   Required Skill/Ability 2:   Proven ability to manage, lead, and direct staff in accomplishing both individual and collective goals. Ability to train staff at all levels. Ability to prioritize effectively among competing demands. Experience with collections control and management. Demonstrated experience with donor relations and purchases.
