About the University of Toronto Libraries The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes. The library of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto is the largest education library in Canada. It supports Initial Teacher Education, graduate studies, professional development, and research and teaching in the field of education. The relationships between research, theory, and practice requires a unique collection of library resources and services. The library has the largest collection of education materials in Canada, including current and historical curriculum materials and textbooks, media materials and children’s literature. Our collection represents the educational research literature in its broadest sense, covering the full spectrum of human cognitive development and lifelong learning with strengths in higher education, and adult education, women's studies in education and additional language learning. It has a growing emphasis on social justice education, critical anti-racism, gender studies and Indigenous education. In addition to our specialized collections, staff at the OISE Library are engaged in providing in-depth research services, customized library instruction, and support for all aspects of research, teaching, and learning for the OISE community, education practitioners, and the public. The Opportunity The University of Toronto Library system seeks an enthusiastic, innovative and experienced individual to provide leadership to the OISE Library and manage a team of eight appointed staff and librarians, as well as a range of student casual employees. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Librarian, the Director will provide vision and strategic direction to the OISE Library. The OISE Library has a strong history of engagement and collaboration with faculty, students and the wider community. Building on these successful partnerships, the Director will position the library as a recognized leader in delivering proactive, evidence-based, user-focused programs, collections and initiatives that support OISE’s four departments.  As a faculty, OISE has a firm commitment towards Indigenous Education and resurgence. The Director will continuously learn about obligations to Indigenous sovereignty and Nationhood and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous students, faculty, staff and services. Responsibilities include providing leadership, supervision, support and mentorship to library employees; fostering innovative programs and services that meet the growing needs of faculty, graduate students, teacher candidates and members of the larger educational community; and cultivating and sustaining collaborative relationships with OISE administrators, faculty and students in support of research, teaching and learning. The Director will also communicate with stakeholders, partners and potential donors. As a collegial member of the library team, the Director is a hands-on leader who participates in library services, including research support, teaching, public service and collection development.  Other responsibilities include assessment/evaluation of library services and collections; participation on relevant central library committees and professional development opportunities; development and implementation of UTL-wide strategic plans and directions alongside administrative colleagues and senior library management. The Director will also have responsibility for representing the Library on issues relevant to the portfolio and will be actively engaged with relevant organizations in the wider education community. Required Qualifications The successful candidate will have:
  • A degree from an accredited Master’s level program in library and information studies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and managerial and administrative experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Strong commitment to engaging and maintaining relationships with Indigenous students, faculty and staff.
  • Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to nurture that capacity in others.
  • Experience using a proactive, collaborative approach to developing user‐centered services with demonstrated outcomes.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, intercultural, communication and relationship building skills.
  • Experience creating and fostering a positive working environment.
  • Experience providing research and teaching support, including strong knowledge related to pedagogical skills and issues.
  • Strong familiarity with collection development best practices.
  • Awareness of established and emerging developments/trends in education libraries, such as knowledge synthesis, scholarly publishing and bibliometrics/alt metrics.
  • Demonstrated planning, decision making and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:  The successful candidate will preferably have:
  • A Bachelor of Education or equivalent and/or related experience as an educator.
Salary and Terms of Appointment It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian III or IV level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB III: $95,411; LIB IV: $112,418 (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications). Benefits: We offer generous benefits packages to all employees.
