The Digital Repositories Librarian is responsible for advancing the Hesburgh Libraries’ overall strategy for the management and discovery of digital collections through our digital collections platforms - the institutional repository, the digital exhibit system, and a forthcoming digital asset management system. In collaboration with other library units, this individual has primary authority to guide the development of a successful, interoperable ecosystem of tools that support and showcase our collections; to leverage repository services to enable and support a robust and sustainable, scholarly communications ecosystem; and to advance multiple and equitable modes of access to the Libraries’ repository-based collections. The Digital Repositories Librarian:
  • serves as the link between content specialists/creators and technical staff and takes the lead role in the creation, design, maintenance, promotion, and stewardship of repository-based collections services in support of building, disseminating, and storing digital collections;
  • serves as a link between the Hesburgh Libraries and system vendors to provide feedback on feature prioritization and advance the needs of our users and institution;
  • develops, coordinates, delivers, monitors, assesses, and guides the services, infrastructure, and operations for the Hesburgh Libraries’ current and future digital content repositories, including the current institutional repository, CurateND;
  • is responsible for creating a customer-first approach to developing functional requirements for the Libraries’ digital repositories;
  • ensures robust repository services;
  • provides expertise in the development, implementation and assessment of procedures for providing access to Hesburgh Libraries’ digital special collections, digital exhibits, and other digitized or born-digital content while monitoring external developments, standards development, and changing needs in these areas;
  • develops, manages, and provides guidance on digital collections and exhibits that are created by the Hesburgh Libraries and other units at the University.
  • Reporting to the Head of Library Application Management, the Digital Repositories Librarian collaborates with programs across the Hesburgh Libraries and University of Notre Dame to consult on projects, manage content, and ensure repository services are delivered and improved according to needs and changing technologies.
Responsibilities As the Service Manager for the Institutional Repository (CurateND), MARBLE (an online collections systems that brings museum, library, and archival content together), and the Digital Exhibits platform, leads the strategy and direction for the institutional repositories, digital collections, and digital exhibits at Hesburgh Libraries and:
  • determines the scope, guidelines, workflows, and policies for these systems and products;
  • prioritizes feature requests, manages backlog and roadmap, and provides strategies for maintenance and improvement to digital collections platforms;
  • collaborates with the technical team to determine technical infrastructure, workflows, and integration with other digital services across the Hesburgh Libraries for digital repository platforms, including digitized specialized collections, digital exhibits, and the management of other digital assets, such as datasets;
  • collaborates with vendors and user communities across institutions to support and improve digital collection platforms;
  • provides quality outreach and develops relationships with campus partners and stakeholders for whom the institutional repository and digital collections platforms are essential:
    • respond to questions and requests for feature enhancements
    • articulate value of products in teaching, learning, and research and advocate for their usage on campus
  • develops and implements procedures, workflows, and other necessary documentation for the institutional repository and digital collections platform, in consultation with colleagues within the Hesburgh Libraries.
  • Together with other stakeholders, conducts user research, usability testing, analytics analysis and assessments of the Libraries’ institutional repository and digital collections.
  • Researches and maintains awareness and develops in-depth knowledge of new repository technology, relevant national standards and best practices, assesses and integrates these into library practices for best results as appropriate.

As a member of the library faculty, the Digital Repositories Librarian participates in faculty and professional activities in the Hesburgh Libraries, within the University, and in the library and other appropriate professional organizations. They engage in professional development including scholarship in librarianship, information science, or other relevant fields; engage in service to the profession with a commitment to continuing professional growth and development; help to shape future library services by participating in library-wide planning teams, through collaboration throughout the Libraries, and leads or participates in cross-programmatic projects.   • ALA accredited master’s library degree or its equivalent, or other advanced degree appropriate to the position (degree should be awarded prior to the start date of the position);
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
  • Strong commitment to user-centered service and the ability to conduct outreach to users at all levels;
  • Self-motivation, project management skills, and the ability to multi-task with various deadlines;
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with digital collections and digital collection platforms, such as institutional repositories, digital exhibits and/or digital asset management systems;
  • Experience delivering services to researchers in an academic setting;
  • Knowledge of or experience with project management practices;
  • Good technical skills and ability to communicate technical issues to users.
