Purpose

The University of Texas Libraries seeks a collaborative, detail-oriented, and highly motivated individual to support UT Libraries in its mission to evolve and sustain digital collections for teaching, learning, and research. The Head of Digitization leads digitization planning and operations as an integral part of the Preservation and Digital Stewardship unit. The role supervises the team responsible for digitizing collection materials in a variety of formats, using a range of capture technologies and techniques. The Head of Digitization will collaborate with colleagues across the University of Texas Libraries to identify, plan, and implement projects and initiatives requiring digitization of UT Libraries collection materials for purposes of access and long-term preservation.   Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop, plan, and implement projects for digitization of UT Libraries collection materials.
  • Lead planning, operations, and project management for the Digitization unit.
    • Maintain digitization specifications and digital production workflows and guidelines.
    • Oversee tracking and documentation of progress on digitization projects. Compile production data and statistics.
    • Triage, prioritize, and assign project tasks across the unit, making best use of technology and staffing resources.
    • Engage in continuous improvement by assessing effectiveness and efficiency of digitization procedures, workflows, and tools. Recommend and implement process improvements.
    • Work with external digitization vendors for outsourcing, as needed.
  • Select content from UTL collections for digitization
  • Supervise a team of 4 FTE performing digitization operations.
  • Engage in professional development and provide education and outreach opportunities regarding digitization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library science or equivalent, with four or more years of relevant experience. A degree in a relevant field or a combination of education plus experience in a field with transferable skills may be substituted as appropriate.
  • In-depth knowledge of digitization methods, standards, and technology and an understanding of emerging trends.
  • Experience creating digital assets using a variety of digitization equipment and capture software.
  • Experience with development and management of digitization workflows.
  • Experience providing effective leadership that values diverse voices and perspectives
  • Excellent organization skills and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments/projects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to find creative solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment with a broad range of people from diverse backgrounds.
  • High level of initiative and self-motivation, and strong decision-making skills.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, accessibility, equity, and inclusion in the workplace or community.
  Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience training and supervising staff.
  • Experience providing effective leadership in an academic library or similar setting.
  • Experience reformatting audio and audiovisual materials.
  • Experience managing outsourced projects.
  • Experience seeking, planning, and carrying out grant-funded digitization projects.
  • Experience working effectively and collaboratively with peers, donors, collectors, and scholars.
  • Experience working with Digital Asset Management software to store and manage digitized content.

Salary Range

$60,000 + depending on qualifications
